Fetch App for iPad (33 posts)

I've been following the Apple iPad announcement and the device fills all my traveling needs except a way to update & upload/download pages on my web site.

The iPad will run Apps from the iPhone AppStore.

If you could develop a Fetch app & we could convince BBEdit to do the same, I for one in many, would be a seriously happy camper!!

    Hi Linda,

Thanks for the suggestion and feedback.

We're still digesting the iPad announcement and thinking about the possibilities for future work.

Count me in as +1 for Fetch for iPad!

I've been using Fetch since the Dartmouth days and have recommended it to tons of clients. While I don't have an iPod or iPhone, the iPad is very enticing. I climb mountains and maintain websites. It could replace my MacBook Air, shaving a pound and a half off my back, and I could make very good use of the 3G access.

Apart from email and web, all I need are a good text editor and ftp client - but they would be essential. I see some folks at BBEdit Talk are busy wishing, I'll add a vote there and a vote here for Fetch!

    Thanks
    -Joe

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for the feedback and thoughts.

Out of curiosity, if there was a Fetch for the iPad, what features would be most important to you? What tasks would you most want to be able to accomplish with Fetch on an iPad?

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott -

Thanks for the reply. It's encouraging to know that you might consider this.

My basic needs are simple. I would like to be able to set up Shortcuts to various live and staging servers, upload and download files (of course), and occasionally change permissions. I took a look at the Apps currently available and none of them appear as robust and trustworthy as Fetch on my MacBook.

While I don't currently have experience with the iPod/Pad, one area I think might be tricky could be file management on these devices?

Looking back from where we came, it's not terribly far-fetched that this sort of development could be on the horzon.

    Thanks
    -Joe

    Hi Scott & Joe,

    "far-fetched" (groan)

I agree with the Shortcuts. My goal would primarily be to download pages from & upload changes to my website while traveling.

    Thank you for considering this.

    Cheers,

    Hi Joe and Linda,

    Thanks for the additional thoughts.

To be clear, our replies here should not be taken as an indication that we are planning a version of Fetch for the iPad; we are just interested in hearing about what you think you'd like if there was such a thing.

And yes, if the iPad is like the iPhone, you may not be able to work with files in the same way you work with them on a Mac today, which might limit what things you could do with an FTP client. But of course, it remains to be seen exactly what is or isn't possible with an iPad.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

I am absolutely in agreement -- with Fetch for the iPad I would buy an iPad and be productive! After reading the latest updates about iPad, I said the only thing I need now is Fetch. With Fetch, I'm set. So yes, count me in. You are the perfect software for it -- and have been for me for many many years.

I also would be very pleased with a Fetch iPad app.... simple addition to a server and permission changes; along with shortcuts, would fit the bill nicely.

I would love to be able to upload, download and delete files from my iPad. Fetch is very important for maintaining my sites.

Hi! I'm using an iPad this instant and need an APP on this tablet to make emergency changes to our website, taxi1010.com, if there's a power failure here, or if our main development computer can't be connected to the Internet. In particular, I'd need the "Change Name" function. We keep our "Daily Splash" page uplinked in advance, with names like «splash0528.htm» and «splash0529.htm» which we change to «splash.htm» when that date arrives. Thanks for your wonderful Fetch over the years. Ciao, Richard

3 months ago, I commented: "While I don't currently have experience with the iPod/Pad, one area I think might be tricky could be file management on these devices?"

I wonder if the iPhone OS 4 announced today opens up new possibilities here. Folders seem to be a new feature, but these appear to be for apps - not documents. Using Fetch to move files back and forth to websites obviously requires a lot of document management. Folders are a start, at least. One other caveat, according to gizmodo: the iPad won't get the 4.0 upgrade until Fall of this year.

    Hi,

The folders discussed during the iOS 4 announcement are just a visual tool for organizing the display of apps on the iPhone or iPad home screen, they do not have any relation to actual file management on the iPad.

It's not clear from the iOS 4 announcement what if any changes to file management there might be, but once full details are revealed we'll be looking it over.

    Hi Jody,

No, there's no news to report on that front.

I would also like to throw my two cents in for an iPad Fetch app - we've used Fetch for years and for travel situations taking an iPad along and knowing I can download, edit and reload pages to clients' sites using shortcuts would be tremendously valuable to us.

    Keep up the great work!

    Hi!
We also have an iPad now and are sorely in need of a (free) FTP client. We've been using Fetch for years on our computers. It seems all the iPad FTP apps require a computer to do the work. What we need is an FTP client that works independently on the iPad. Is this difficult? Why aren't there already a bazillion of these apps out there?
    Thanks Scott!!

  • Scott McGuire Administrator

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your feedback.

We believe that yes, creating an FTP application for the iPad would be a significant amount of work, which may be why there aren't a lot of them out there.

While we are not currently working on such a program, we will continue to re-evaluate the situation. So for future reference, we'd be curious to hear what sort of tasks you would want to accomplish on an iPad with an FTP program?

    Thanks,

It can be simple -- just the ability to upload and download files from the iPad. It might need to integrate with one of the other programs available for editing files since there's no storage on the iPad to really save a file.

I upload documents to my webserver using fetch and find it very handy to upload files when I travel so that I can download and use them anywhere and not have to worry about getting viruses on my USB or flash drive.

    Hi...

I am a pro photographer that sends multiple large photo files to various photo desks all around the world on very tight deadlines...i have just bought the ipad 2 and it is a necessity for me using fetch. Do you have any updates on future software for the ipad? You would help me travel just a little bit lighter!!!

    Posted 12 years ago #

  • Jim Matthews Administrator

    Hi Jae,

Would you mind answering some questions about how you use your iPad? It would help us understand how you might use a version of Fetch for the iPad.

    * Are you using the iPad Camera Connection kit to get photos from your camera into your iPad?
    * Do you use FTP or SFTP (or both) to send photos to photo desks?
    * Have you tried any of the iPad FTP clients that are available now? If so, what did you like or not like about them?

    Thanks!

I agree with Jae. Would love to be able send photos from the field through my iPad.
I do use the iPad Camera Connection kit.
My primary use is high school journalism.

I'm with Hal and the others who have posted about uploading photos and files... I am a professional photographer and though I usually travel with my laptop and currently use Fetch to access my server, there are times when I travel a bit lighter and wish I could upload my photos to my iPad via my 3rd party camera connection kit and then upload the images to my server...

    Hello -
I hope this function is in the works! I would LOVE to be able to upload PDFs directly from my iPad for my students - or keynotes, photos, etc from their iPads to our class website with an FTP/Fetch option.
What is the status on this development?
    :D

Thank you for all you do - you make my job about TEACHING and NOT about having to learn ALL of the techie skills necessary to support my students outside of school. I think I'm ahead of the game just knowing how to drag FTP files! LOL
