Fetch opening port after port after port (6 posts)

Any idea how to stop Fetch from cascading port-openings? It just keeps opening port after port. Why is it doing this?
    Thanks for any insight...

If you are using active mode FTP, then Fetch (or any other FTP client) needs to open a port for each file list or file transfer.

Is opening ports causing a problem?

Well, actually, this seems to happen regardless of whether I have Fetch set to active or passive mode. Could it be related to my Symantec Firewall? I will try disabling the firwall to see whether it happens again - didn't think to try that. At work now, so will try this evening.

A single upload of a folder containing 20 images will generate 20 port openings. This just seems odd.

FTP requires a new connection for every file transfer, so that's exactly what I'd expect. SFTP does not open per-transfer connections, so if that's an option you can try that.

Just out of curiousity, how are you monitoring the port openings?

    Thanks,

Well, it does seem to narrow in on my Norton Firewall. I had thought I'd eliminated it from question, but just trying to FTP in to my site with the FW disabled allowed unhindered access. When enabled, Norton throws up notices like this: http://hellum.ca/images/norton1.png . I also note that it says its closing (!) open ports, which seems strange. Port 21 settings in Norton have all incoming set to 'denied.'
Clearlt, this is something to be worked out with my Norton Firewall setup. Sorry this wasn't caught before I posted. Thank you for your attention, though.

After a file transfer or file list download Fetch will close the data connection it opened; that may be why Norton is reporting ports being closed.
