Fetch Shortcuts can not be saved (24 posts)

    I have used Fetch as my most reliable ftp-client. Since a few weeks, every time I open fetch (Version 5.3) I get the error message «Fetch Shortcuts could not be saved because you do not have permission to save a file there - Try changing the permissions of the destination folder, or saving to a different folder.»

    I deleted all the Shortcuts and removed the following Files

    «~/Library/Preferences/Fetch Cache»
    «~/Library/Preferences/com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch.Shortcuts.plist»
    «~/Library/Preferences/com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch.plist»

    I reinstalled Fetch.

    I tried to add new Shortcuts which wasn't possible according to the error «These settings cannot be used because you do not have permission to save a file there - Try changing the permissions of the destinatin folder, or saving to a different folder». The next time I start up Fetch, the old shotcuts are there again and the error message as well.

    I have 10.5.6 running on an MacBook Intel
    Fetch works perfectly with other users on the system.

    but it never helped.

    Which file should I remove or change it's permissions?
    Any other idea how to solve the problem?

    Thank you very much!

    Hi,

    This error indicates a problem with the Mac OS X keychain, which Fetch uses to securely store the passwords for your shortcuts and recent connections. (For some reason Mac OS X gives this completely misleading error about permissions, even though that's not really the problem.)

    Please do the following, which should fix the problem:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open the Keychain Access application, which is in the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder.
    * Go to the Keychain Access menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click on the "First Aid" tab.
    * Make sure both "Synchronize login keychain password" and "Set login keychain as default" are checked.
    * Then go to the Keychain Access menu, and choose Keychain First Aid.
    * In the password field of the Keychain First Aid window, enter your Mac OS X admin password (this should be the same as your Mac OS X login password).
    * Click the Repair radio button.
    * Click the Start button.
    * Once it's done, close the Keychain First Aid window.
    * Restart your Macintosh.

    Then try Fetch again.

    Please let us know if this doesn't fix the problem.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi estilizar,

    Which version of Fetch are you using?

    What exactly are you doing when you get the error, and could you please confirm exactly what the error message you receive is?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Scott,

    thanks für your answer. I have the Version 5.5.2. When i open Fetch, then i get the message: "Fetch Shortcuts konnten nicht gesichert werden, da ein unbekannter Fehler aufgetreten ist. Mac OS-Fehler -8905".
    I deleted all plist und Cache-Files, i overridet the app. I check the permissions. I deleted the Shortcut-List an create an emtpy new....
    The failure comes directly, when i open Fetch, when i ckick save an when i close Fetch.
    My know how in Mac OS X is okay, but i don't know a solution.
    I checked the logs....no information for an failure.

    Thanks for your engagement

    Hi,

    We believe this error is actually font-related, not related to the keychain.

    We'd like you to email us a copy of your Fetch preferences.

    Could you please do the following?

    * Quit Fetch.
    * In the Finder, go to the "Gehe zu" (Go) menu, and choose "Benutzerordner" (Home)
    * Open the Library folder
    * Open the Preferences folder
    * Find the com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch.plist file.

    Please attach it to an email to bugs@fetchsoftworks.com , and we'll look into the problem.

    Thanks,

    I got the same problem after upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6, and I've solved it. It is a cache problem. I had the same error with Intaglio. You need to clean all your previous cache from 10.5. As Onyx is not yet compatible with the new system, Go to MacUpdate and download "Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner". Run it in demo mode, click on the "caches" tab, select "Deep cleaning" and choose all local, system and users caches (in short, select everything), then click clean. After doing it, restart your mac, and the problem should be solved.

    PozHonks, thanks for the tip.

    estilizar, we're glad to hear the problem is fixed.

    I just wanted to note, for anyone else who may experience the -8905 error, that we have a couple of different suggestions to try that do not involve getting another piece of software and deleting all your caches. So please let us know if you are experiencing this problem with Fetch, and would like to try alternative suggestions.

    (Also note that cleaning the caches is not necessary to fix the first problem mentioned in this topic.)

    Thanks,

    I've the same problem like estilizar. I've tried all the tips given in this thread but no one helps. Is there any solution ready for this problem?

    Hi Speedster,

    The -8905 error is happening to a few users of Fetch on Mac OS X 10.6 and who have their system language set to something other than English. We are working on an update to fix the problem.

    In the meantime, please send an email to us at bugs@fetchsoftworks.com and we should be able to help you out now.

    Thanks,

    We have released Fetch 5.5.3, which includes a fix for the -8905 error discussed in this topic.

    If you are experiencing this problem, please upgrade to Fetch 5.5.3. You can download it from the Fetch Download page, or by choosing Check for Update from the Fetch menu in an earlier version.

    I have the shortcut list and can open it in Fetch but it lacks the PWs.

    But then it doesn't stay. How to save it?

    Posted 9 months ago #

  • Jim Matthews Administrator

    Hi Jane,

    Fetch stores passwords in the macOS keychain. You can view that with the Keychain Access application, found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "it doesn't stay". What is it that doesn't stay?

    Thanks,

    I can click on the file and the information opens under there, but without PWs.
    It does not save however. Is there a place to put it so it WILL save?
    Import?

    I don't know how to reintroduce my old keychain into this new computer however.

    I guess I could manually set them up again... at least I have the acct names which are weird little strings of letters, to copy from the file that opens when I click on it.

    Hi Jane,

    If you click on a shortcut in the shortcut list and choose "Edit Shortcut" from the Shortcuts menu it will let you enter a password, and that password will be saved in the macOS keychain.

    Thanks,

    I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!

    I at least got the list with the login info transferred. I opened the file I had, and then dragged each one into the existing list on Fetch. And it saved. So that saves me some time. All I have to do now is fill in the PW and save in Keychain.
