Hi ListerMint,
Could you please do the following steps and post the entire transcript?
* Quit Fetch.
* Open Fetch again.
* Try connect to the server.
* Once Fetch stalls out, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
* Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message. The whole transcript is helpful in figuring out what the problem is, since it shows us what settings Fetch is using and what else it has tried to do to connect.
Thanks,
Scott McGuire

Thank you Scott,
I followed your directions. In looking through the transcript I discovered that my Mac had a firewall turn on and it was blocking port 21. I adjusted the preferences and all is well.
Thanks again -
Scott McGuire Administrator
Hi ListerMint,
You're welcome, and thanks for the followup. Glad to hear all is working now.

Hi,
Could you quit Fetch, open it again, and then try to connect? If that fails, could you post the entire contents of the Fetch Transcript window? It is important to include everything, for context.
Also, I would uncheck the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box, since it appears that this server does not support PASV.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Thanks for that transcript. It appears that both active (PORT) and passive (PASV) mode are being blocked. My guess is that the server has a firewall that is blocking passive mode; it is more difficult to guess what might be blocking active mode.
Are you connected to the Internet through a router, or directly to a DSL or cable modem?
If you try to connect to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com (leave the Username and Password fields blank) does that work? Could you post a transcript?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Hi,
I don't have a good explanation for why Fetch is working with ftp.fetchsoftworks.com but not with your server.
Do you know if this server supports SFTP?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

I finally got try out the ftp link on my PC (I been waiting for a new monitor).
I hooked up with FileZilla on my PC (XP Home with SP2). It connected within seconds and I was able to move files around with ease.
This problem appears to be with Fetch 5.3. After I updated all my problems showed up. I have been using Fetch for years. Never had this problem before.
I have Fetch installed on both my Macs. I have an eMac with OS X 10.3.9 and an iMac with OS X 10.5.4. Fetch isn't working on either machine.
BTW, I downloaded the latest version of CyberDuck. It will sometimes connect, but it will not transfer files correctly.
I hope someone can solve this issue. Fetch has always been reliable, until now.
My server does support sftp.
-
Jim Matthews Administrator
Have you tried connecting to the server with SFTP?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews
Fetch Softworks -

Yes, I did try SFTP. The server is not set up for SFTP.
It appears that Fetch is trying access the root directory of the server. Of course, I not in there. When I try to direct Fetch to the correct directory, I get a "no such directory" error.
Actually, I got that once and Fetch actually got through anyway. I had complete access. I closed Fetch connection and tried again, changed nothing, and I haven't been able to get again.
Here's the code for when I actually got in.

It looks to me as if the "root" folder the server is putting you in is in fact the root of your website, not the root of the entire server. So you should not have to change folders to see and upload your website files.
Clearly the problem with the PORT command is intermittent -- it works some times, and not others.
Have you tried any other Mac FTP clients, such as Interarchy, to see if they have the same problem?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews
Fetch Softworks -
ListerMint Member
I'll try Interarchy, but I prefer to use Fetch.
I don't understand why FileZilla works perfectly. I poured over the transcripts and the only difference is the FZ has the a line that say, "200 Type is now 8-bit binary". Fetch says, "200 Type is now ASCII". Is that significant?
-
Jim Matthews Administrator
Would you mind posting the FileZilla transcript? I can take a look at that TYPE command response to see why there is a difference. I do not think that a different transfer type could account for the problem you are seeing, but I'd be happy to try to rule that out.
The fact that Cyberduck does not work reliably for you suggests to me that this is more an issue with your Mac vs. your PC, than it is an issue with Fetch vs. other Mac FTP clients.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Hi,
Thanks for the FileZilla transcript. For some reason FileZilla is asking the server to send the file list as a binary transfer. That's against the FTP protocol specs, but seems to work in this case. I don't think that difference explains the problem you're seeing. For one thing, FileZilla is using passive mode, which is not working at all from Fetch. My best guess is that there is some difference between the way this PC is connected to the Internet and the way your Mac is, and that difference has something to do with the problem.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

I take a look at my Mac Internet connection and see if I can see anything problematic.
I'll be back.
Thanks for all your help, Jim.

The PC and iMac connect in completely different ways and the PC is much more complicated. I couldn't tell if there was problems or not.
However, Interarchy connects just fine, a little slow but it does work. I tried it 6 times and it always worked.

BTW, Interarchy borrowed the hostname and username from the iMac keychain. So I know they are correct.
One note: The server I use requires an underscore instead the @ to access. Interarchy converted the underscore to %40. When I tried this with Fetch, it still wouldn't work.
I hope this information is helpful. I'd like my Fetch back. We have been friends for lot of years. Besides, I just paid for an upgrade.

Thanks, that is very helpful. Would you mind timing a connection with Interarchy, to see how long it takes to get the file list? In particular, if you are watching the transcript, I am curious to know how long it takes for the PASV command to receive a response. Fetch gives up waiting after 20 seconds, and maybe that is not long enough in this situation.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

It averages around 20 secs 4 seconds for the file list to appear in the transcript once it enters Passive Mode.
It averages around another 20 seconds for the list to actually appear in the Interarchy window.
If Fetch's is programmed at a 20 second timeout that would probably explain the lack of access. I looked through the preferences for a way to change the timeout. Apparently, that adjustment is on your end.

Jim Matthews Administrator
Yes, the timeout is written into Fetch. Would you like to try an experimental copy of Fetch with a longer timeout? If so, please send an email to bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com, and I'll send you a download link.
Thanks for all your help in figuring this out,
Jim Matthews

I downloaded and tested the new version. I tried the connection 12 times. 6 with PASV turned on and 6 with PASV turned off. I also timed specific code entries each time. See the code entry notes below.

I hope this helps.

Jim,
Will let you know. Sorry about indiscretion.

I am using Leopard 10.5.4 an Fetch 5.3.
The Fetch transcript says:
Fetch gets the line that says: "Getting file ..." and that is all the farther it gets. It just goes on and on. Finally, it disconnects. No messages show up in the message box.
