File names that are too long can not be deleted? (4 posts)

    I uploaded some files from my Mac with long file names. The files uploaded okay, but when my client tried to download them, it failed. I uploaded them again before I realized the problem and reloaded the files with shorter names. My client was able to download the shorter named files.

    My problem is... The server will not allow me to delete the files with the long names. I get the same error message my client got. "The system cannot find the file specified."

    Hi,

    While this is most likely a server problem, we'd like to see the Fetch transcript to make sure it's not a Fetch problem.

    Could you please try to delete one of the problem files, then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message?

    Assuming it is a server problem, you'll have to contact your hosting provider for help on how to delete the files (either they'll have to do it for you, or you'll have to use a different tool besides Fetch).

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcript. I can confirm that this is a problem with the server.

    The problem may not actually be the length of the names; I suspect the real problem is that there are spaces in the names of the files (there's a space between "Pages" and the number).

    If you've deleted files with spaces in their names before, perhaps it is the length; but the problem with spaces is common. (Unfortunately, many servers let you upload or create files with spaces in the names, but then give errors when you try to delete them.)

    Regardless, you will have to contact your hosting company or the server maintainer in order to get the files deleted.
