Why are jpegs much smaller once they are uploaded to my server?

The most likely explanation is that the JPEGs on your Mac include additional information (such as a thumbnail icon) in their resource forks. Fetch only uploads the data fork -- the image itself -- and so that extra information is not transferred to the server.

    Thanks Jim.

What I find confusing, is that when I download the jpegs back onto my Mac and after the OS builds its preview, the file size remains the same as it was on the server. ICC profiles are retained etc.

The file sizes are being reduced by 50%. So my 3.3mb site is uploading as around 1.5mb

Are the images originally prepared with Photoshop? I believe it's Photoshop that puts the previews in the resource fork.

No, they're coming out of Aperture.

I'll try them out of some other apps to see what I get.
