filename encoding (4 posts)

    I have some filenames with chinese characters in them. When I try to put them, the names automatically become "___.html" in the "put as.." fields.
    Even if I manually type in those chinese characters in the "put as" field, eventually it complains "Fetch could not put ...because some characters could not converted to your preferred encoding". What's my preferred encoding? and how to reset it to be able to handle uft encoding?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    You can read more about Fetch and character encoding in the Character Encoding & Translation topic in Fetch Help (or just click the link here).

    However, in short, the preferred encoding setting can be found in the Miscellaneous pane of the Fetch Preferences, and it does affect how the characters are displayed in the "Put as" field.

    Try doing the following and see if it helps:

    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click the Miscellaneous tab.
    * Click the "Preferred encoding" pop-up menu and choose "Unicode (UTF-8)".
    * Then try putting one of the files with Chinese characters in them.

    If Unicode (UTF-8) turns out to not preserve or display the characters correctly, you might want to try the Chinese encodings and see if they work. But I'd try Unicode first.

    Please let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks,
