I'm assuming that the reason that Get Info might take a long time is so it can tally up all the files sizes to report a directory size...but 99.9% of the time, I don't care about folder size, I just want to be able to change permissions. I don't like the long wait. Is there a way around this that I'm missing?

Yes -- hold down the Option key to turn Get Info into Get Quick Info, which does not calculate folder sizes.

Thanks Jim. Guess I should read the docs more thoroughly.

I wonder if the default action should be not to list directory size? I can't speak for others, but I seldom need to know the size of the directory but primarily just need to change permissions or rename it. Just a thought. Or a toggle in prefs would be cool.
