    When trying to connect to remote servers, the status just sits at "getting file list" and then shows anything. When I say "stop" the status says I'm "connected" but yet I can't see anything. I've tried connecting to multiple servers to make sure it wasn't just a server issue, but it's clear it's fetch.
    I'm using OS 10.1.3 with the latest version of fetch.

    I have the same thing happening to me. I've had the "getting file list" up for hours, and the directory never comes up. I'm running OS 9.0.4. I tried using an older version (3) from work & I got in no problem. Not sure what the deal is.

    I would recommend checking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box in the Firewall section of Preferences. On OS X you also should uncheck the "Use Internet Config" box in the General section of Preferences.

    If that does not work I would recommend posting the contents of the Fetch Transcript window.

    Thanks,

    It was the firewall. Thanks.

    I would recommend trying Fetch 4.0.2, which you can download from http://fetchsoftworks.com Let me know if that does not fix the problem.

    I'm getting this problem also, but it is server sensitive. That is, I can Fetch happily with several servers, but there's one (users.bigpond.net.au) which has this endless 'getting file list' phenomenon, while the transcript says:
    230 User logged in, proceed.
    I've tried all your above sugestions with no success.
    Using Fetch 4.02 in OSX 10.1

    If you choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu it will open a window with a more complete transcript. Could you post the contents of that window?

    Thanks,

    this morning it worked!!!
    Like this:
    230 User logged in, proceed.
    SYST

    LIST

    ...and so on. I didn't restart the machine or Fetch. But it looks from the expanded transcript that some of your recommendations have worked.
    Thanks

    jpeth:

    That transcript does not look like it's from 4.0.2 (or else it's missing the first line). Could you double-check the version number? Also, could you post the transcript with Passive mode transfers unchecked?

    Thanks,

    It looks like the server has a firewall that blocks passive mode. I would recommend unchecking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" checkbox in the Firewall section of Fetch Preferences and then trying to connect again. Does that help?

    Thanks,

    OK... unchecking passive mode got me in and I was able to start downloading files, but soon I received "TR not understood" and "ST not understood" messages...

    It looks like your router (the box that sits between your computer and your Internet connection) has a bug that results in it mangling some commands (so that, for instance, PORT turns into RT). Usually in this situation I would advise using passive mode (this router bug only affects non-passive transfers) but your server is blocking passive connections, so that is not an option. So I would look at updating the firmware in your router, or getting a different router.

    Thanks,

    A similar problem started for me last week. I can connect to the FTP server, but I cannot get a list of files. I think it started after I upgraded to OS 10.3.8, but I'm not positive. I am using Fetch 4.0.3 and have the same firewall settings that always worked. One interesting aspect is that I get the same type of problem using a Windows FTP client at work, but I can FTP via on my Mac at home if I use the Terminal application.

    Here is the Fetch transcript:

    Fetch 4.0.3 System 0x1038 Serial FETCHED001-PM4S-D832 TR

    ftp_list: -30001 (state == GETTING_LIST)

    Thanks for any help anyone can give.

    It looks like the server is behind a firewall that blocks passive mode connections. I would recommend unchecking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" checkbox in the "Firewall" section of Fetch Preferences. For that to work you will have to make sure your OS X firewall is turned off -- you would do that in the Sharing panel of System Preferences.

    Thanks,

    Thanks for your reply. You were almost right that it was a firewall problem, but it was a bit different from what you thought it was.

    I have Norton Personal Firewall insalled, so the OS X firewall is off. I have permission to FTP to this site in NPF preferences and was getting no notifications, so I assumed it was not a problem with my firewall. (It never had been, but I updated to 10.3.8 about 10 days ago).

    From your message, I thought maybe the OS X firewall had been turned back on when I updated, but it was off. However, when I went to the sharing panel, I noticed that in the "services" pane, there is a list of services, and one of those is "FTP." I checked the box to turn FTP sharing on, my problem was solved.

    I don't remember ever looking at the sharing pane before the upgrade, but this may be a new wrinkle in 10.3.8.

    Anyway, my problem is solved, so thanks for your post.

    Hi, I am also having trouble getting past the getting file list stage. I have checked everything suggested above, and turning ftp sharing back on fixed one of my ftp programs, but not fetch. Here is my transcript.

    It just timed out leaving this info in the transcript...

    get_reply():con_conn->Getline() returns -3253
    ftp_list: -30014 (state == GETTING_LIST)
    QUIT
    send_cmd():con_conn->Putline() returns -3253

    Interesting note. Out of frustration I attempted to upload a dead file (one that we haven't used in years that I knew would not interfere with other users.) Not only did it go up, I then received a file list in the window.

    Have you turned off your OS X firewall?

    The fire wall is off. Based on my transcript I would say fetch is not sending the list command to begin with. I just checked and discovered that if I cancel after fetch says getting file list and then under directories select Refresh File List... it then sends the list command and I get my file list.

    Fetch isn't sending a LIST command the first time around because the server is not answering the PORT command.

    Could you try connecting to ftp.fetchsoftworks.com? Leave the User ID and Password fields blank. Can you get a file list? If not, could you post a transcript?

    Thanks,

    Powweb: I would suggest having the client turn off passive mode (in the Firewall section of Fetch's Preferences window) and make sure that the OS X firewall is turned off (in the Sharing panel of OS X's System Preferences application). Does that work?

    Thanks,
