Hidden temporary file (8 posts)

I attempted to upload a large file and lost the connection. When I tried to upload again I got an error with the message server responded: "filename.ext: Temporary hidden file /httpdocs / .in.filenname.ext. already exists". httpdocs is the name of the folder I was attempting to upload to and filename.ext is not the actual name in the error message. The actual name was the name and extension of the file that I was trying to upload. I cannot find the hidden file and when I try to upload it doesn't overwrite even if I have chosen the overwrite option. How can I find and delete this partially uploaded file?

    Hi,

    You should try the following:

    * In Fetch, go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences
    * Click the Miscellaneous tab
    * Make sure the "Omit filenames beginning with a period" checkbox is unchecked (it is unchecked by default, but just to make sure)
    * Connect to your server, and open the httdocs folder
    * Go to the View menu, and choose Refresh
    * If you see the temporary file, select and delete it

However, it may be that the server doesn't tell Fetch about this file for some reason, so there is no way to delete it in Fetch. If the above doesn't work, you'll need to contact the people who run the server and ask them to delete the file for you.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks,

Thanks for your speedy response. Unfortunately your suggestion didn't solve the problem so I will take your further advice and check with the sites administrator and I will let you know how I got on.

I am sorry to report that my administrator cannot find the missing files. My suspicion is that the files don't exist but Fetch has a record that I uploaded files with these names and won't allow me to upload files with the same name.

I must apologise yet again. It was all my fault. You will be pleased to hear that my suspicion's were unfounded and my administrator has found the offending files and deleted them. Thanks

    Hi Michael,

I'm glad to hear the problem has been found and fixed on the server.

Just for clarification, Fetch does not attempt to keep track of files you have previously uploaded and prevent you from uploading new ones based on previous uploads. When you ask Fetch to upload a file, it just takes the file name and says to the server "here is the file I'd like to upload, in this format" - any error that comes back about files already existing comes from the server, not from Fetch; Fetch just passes the error along to you.

    Thanks,

when i try to delete tmp files by running run %tmp%. and if i select all of them by control A, i receive message that this folder contains 7 hidden files. If u want to select this files as well, enable viewing of hidden files in control panel option.
How should i go for it and delete them too.. Does it affect speed of internet?

    Hi,

I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you having a problem deleting files with Fetch?

    Thanks,
