Try unchecking the "Translate ISO Characters" box in the Misc section of Preferences; does that fix the problem?

It seems to do the trick. THanks a lot. If not I'll come back. If in japan, look me up I'll buy you a beer.

Is there some trick i should know about working with Japanese Characters?
If I download kanji-containing .html files to my desktop as "text" they wont display on my computer (or when reuploaded to my server)
If I download in "binary" the files display OK on my machine and on the server if uploaded as "raw data"
HOWEVER, I also use English only files which I must downloade/upload as text.
So when working on my site - which contains both roman character only files and Kanji files - I have to keep going into preferences and changing from "raw data" to "text" before uploading depending on whether or not the file has kanji in it.
Is there an easier way?
Please help
Thanks a lot!
