    Dear Jim,

please help... I have no more more hair to pull...

My data: MacOS 8.6, Fetch 4.02, Host-Server - Windoze NT 4, Internet connection - DHCP, cable modem, Location - Austria (if it matters).

No problem: Fetch connects to the server alright (DreamWeaver 4.01 dosn't and hangs at "Verifying Connection...").

    Problem(s):

    1) After the connection is established, the dog keeps running and running and running and running... "Getting file list..." is the message, whereas I already see all the files there should be and can be.

    2) If I press "Stop", I am able to highlite either a file or a folder, so that the "Get" button becomes clickable.

    3) When I then click on "Get" I am able only to download either very small files one after the other (never in a batch), or only some very few files from a highlited folder - and then everything stops... and the dog runs and runs again...

    4) The server people are well aware of this:

"One possibility is that the server is running Windows NT 4 Service Pack 6; there is a known problem with the tcpip.sys file of that release and Mac clients. If that is the case, one workaround is to replace the tcpip.sys file on the server with the one from Service Pack 5."

but refuse "to downgrade" their system, fearing that "this would negatively" influence their other clients (Windows clients, I suspect).

    5) Also, they tell me that the line in transcript saying "500 'MACB ENABLE': command not understood" shows that it is my system that is faulty, not theirs.

    6) I have toggled "Passive mode" on and off - to no avail.

Below is a transcript of a connection after which the dog would not stop running...

Please let me know if you might need another one with a failed download of files.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Best regards,

    Valery

You can choose the "Don't send MACB" option from the Obscure Options pop-up menu in the Misc. section of Preferences. I don't expect it to help things, but it might convince the server administrator that the MACB command isn't to blame. You could also suggest that they upgrade the servers to Windows 2000 server -- presumably their Windows clients wouldn't mind a more modern server OS.

Sorry I can't be more helpful,

Thank you very much for your reply, Jim!

So if I understood you right, it's the Windows Server SW which is causing me problems, not my MacOS or Fetch? Did I get it right?

    Thanks again!

Yes, that's right -- the problem appears to be due to the behavior of NT 4 Service Pack 6; older and newer versions of Microsoft server operating systems apparently don't have this problem.
