Menu "work on": "No Program" (16 posts)

    Fetch 5.3 on Mac OS 10.4.11

    The Situation:
    On a FTP server there is a FileMaker-file.
    I can click on it and choosing menu "work on" (in German: "Bearbeiten. Then my local FileMaker Program starts and opens the file.
    :-)
    (Btw.: the chmod of the file is 777.)

    The Problem:
    When a friend of mine (same configuration in Fetch, Mac OS and FileMaker) tries to do exactly the same, Fetch opens a window which says (approximately in English:) "There is no program found to open this file."
    :-(

    Beside that he has no chance, to implement in the Fetch preferences, last item "intern", any programs.
    We compared our other preferences of Fetch, they all are identically.

    How can we solve that problem?

    Hi,

    Your friend should try the following, I think it will do what you want:

    * Connect to the server.
    * Click the Filemaker file.
    * Go to the Remote menu, and choose Information.
    * Click the triangle next to the Übertragungsoptioen label at the bottom of the info window to display the Übertragungsoptioen pane, if it's not already displayed.
    * Click the "Dateien dieses Typs bearbeiten mit" menu, and choose "Anderes".
    * Find and select Filemaker.
    * Close the info window.

    Then he should try clicking the file and choosing Bearbeiten; does the file open in Filemaker?

    (I apologize that I cannot write the entire answer in German.)

    Thanks,

    We followed this way.

    In the information window of Remote is correctly written (by itself), that file of this type have to be opened and to be "worked on" with FileMaker Pro 8.0v1.

    But, nevertheless, Fetch brings the same error window again and again ...

    :confused:

    Hi,

    Can your friend download this file successfully? (Click the file, and click the Holen button, instead of clicking Bearbeiten.)

    If so, will the downloaded file open in Filemaker?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Oh yes, he can!
    And in its Fetch-window the file has the icon of FileMaker.

    All this makes the problem so very strange.

    For me it seems that it is just a "communication problem" between Fetch and Mac-Finder. But how to resolve?
    (He upgrated recently to the actual Fetch version because we thought, that's a problem of the older version - but obviously it is not.)

    Btw: Somebody else on a Windows machine (unknown with which FTP client) can work on that FileMaker-file too - without any problems, like me.

    Hi,

    Please ask your friend to try the following:

    * Open Fetch.
    * Go to the Hilfe menu, and choose Fetch Hilfe (Fetch Help).
    * In the help window's search box, search for "Launch Services" (the help is only in English, sorry).
    * Click on the "Fixing problems choosing editors and helpers" result.
    * Scroll the text down to the link that says "rebuild my Launch Services database for me".
    * Click the link and follow the instructions.
    * After the script runs, open FileMaker before opening Fetch.
    * Then open Fetch.
    * Try using Bearbeiten on the FileMaker file.

    Warning: running this script will empty the Mac's trash; your friend should not run the script unless that is okay. And after running this script, your friend may be warned that they are opening applications for the first time, even though it is not the first time they have opened them. This is normal.

    Let us know if this helps or if you have any questions about the above.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    It was a promising suggestion, but unfortunately it didn't help.

    The situation is the same as before: "No program found to open ..." :()

    Hi,

    Could you please ask your friend to do the following? Perhaps the transcript (mitschrift) will provide some clues about the problem.

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to the server.
    * Click the Filemaker file.
    * Choose Bearbeiten.
    * Then choose Fetch-Mitschrift from the Fenster menu, copy the entire contents of the Fetch-Mitschrift window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Ok, the first "Mitschrift" is the one of me, the second one is the "Mitschrift" of my friend.
    I don't see any difference, except the firewall-sentence (but in fact both we have the firewall off).

    For the pubclicatioon here I covered the file-name and the ip-address, of course.

    Hi,

    I apologize that I did not reply earlier, but when you edit a previous message (instead of posting a new one), the message board thread doesn't get marked as containing a new post, so I didn't realize you had posted new information.

    Thanks for the transcripts (Mitschrift), but neither shows a file being downloaded, which is part of what happens when you click a file and choose Bearbeiten. Could you please try again - connect, click a file, choose Bearbeiten, and then send me the transcript (Mitschrift)?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcripts.

    Could your friend please try doing the following? (I apologize for the English, I do not know the German terms for all of these.)

    * Choose "Home" from the Go menu in the Finder
    * Open the Library folder
    * Open the Preferences folder
    * Find the Fetch Prefs, Fetch Cache, and com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch.plist files, and move them to the Desktop.

    Then he should use the Information window to set .fp7 files to open in Filemaker again, as described in my first reply above.

    Does this fix the problem?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    No problem, we do understand "preferences" very well.
    ;)

    Why didn't we tried that before by ourselfs!?
    :eek:

    Of course, we will try-it now and will informe you.

    Posted 15 years ago #

  • zirbel Member

    My friend said, that we did-it long time ago.
    Well, we did-it now again.
    But: the problem resists.

    And now, I think, it's time to say goodbye.
    We will try with an other software, like YummyFTP. It worked on my mac and I hope it will do that also on my friend's mac.

    Hi,

    We are sorry we could not provide an immediate solution for you.

    If another FTP client does not meet your needs and you decide to try Fetch again, we will be happy to continue working on solving your problem.

    Thanks,
