Mirror troubleshooting (22 posts)

    Hello,

I'm attempting to mirror some pages from a local folder to a remote one. Somehow the pages never turn up online, however.

I work on a Mac with iWeb. I'm able to put the entire web site, but that takes several minutes. Is there a workaround or something I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Lee,

Just to make sure I've understood your question properly - you can see your website online when you use the Put command in Fetch, but not when you use the Mirror command?

Or do you not see them, even if you use the Put command?

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

I can see my web site when I use the Put command. When I try to mirror certain pages, though, those don't ever show up in their updated form. So I always have to Put the whole site, even if I've tweaked the text on just one page.

    Hi Lee,

Does the transfer window show files uploading when you use the Mirror command?

I know this sounds obvious, but the first thing I'd do is check to make sure that the remote folder you've chosen as the destination for the Mirror operation is the same one that you're using when you Put the files.

Assuming that isn't the problem, the next time you try to Mirror your site, and you don't see the changes on line (or if you want to make a small change and run a test), could you send us the transcript after you do that? We'll take a look and see if we can figure out what might be going on.

To send a transcript, choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them here.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

The transfer window does show files transfering, but it happens very quickly. I also notice that when I go to browse the files I want to transfer, some of them cannot be selected. For instance, I can select "Shows", which is the name of one of my pages in iWeb, but I can't go on to also select all the files contained in the shows page.

As far as I know, I am mirroring to the correct remote folder as I'm prompted to type in my keychain password each time I try to mirror. I'll try sending a transcript later today, but I don't recall one appearing.

    Hi Lee,

The transcript shows that shapeimage_1.png, Shows.css, Shows.js, and transparent.gif were successfully uploaded by the mirror operation. Does that sound like what you expect?

If yes, can you tell me what change should be visible on your website as a result of those uploads? I'll take a look and let you know whether I see the change or not (and try to figure out why I might not be seeing it).

    Thanks,

Basically you would see an updated "Shows" page. I tried mirroring the updated page last night with a new Nov. 2 date (I'm a musician), but the change never showed up online. Does it take longer to appear online as a result of mirroring? The Put command is pretty much instantaneous.

Also, when I'm grabbing the files I want to mirror, I can only grab the folder, but I can't highlight any of the folder's contents.

    Hi Lee,

Sorry for the delay in replying. When I look at the "Shows" page, I see a Nov. 2 show listed. I don't know if that's because you used the Put command or not.

No, updates do not take longer to appear when you use the mirror command than when you use the Put command.

However, it's possible that the different methods might affect whether your browser's cache recognizes when a page has been updated or not. Have you tried using the Reload or Refresh command in your browser after uploading files with the Mirror command, just to make sure you aren't looking at an outdated version of the webpage that is stored in the web browser's cache?

    Thanks,

You can just select one folder for mirroring at a time. But Fetch will go through the entire contents of the folder and all its subfolders, and upload all the new or changed files in any of the subfolders of the folder you selected.

    Hi Scott,

Yes, I've tried reloading the browser after mirroring. I've even restarted the browser and gone back to the page, to no avail. To date I've only grabbed one folder at a time to mirror, so I still don't know why it doesn't seem to work.

Anyway, I'll keep fiddling with it. Thanks very much for your feedback.

    Hi Lee,

I figured you'd probably tried reloading, but I wanted to make sure.

I see that back in your first mesage you say you're using iWeb; are you are using the "Publish to Folder" command again after you make changes to create a new copy of your website?

Otherwise, if you just make the changes in iWeb, and run the Mirror command in Fetch, changes will not get uploaded, because only iWeb's internal copy of the website knows about the changes. You must use "Publish to Folder" again after making any changes to your site in iWeb to update the external copy that you upload with Fetch.

And, unfortunately, once you do that, then the Mirror command will upload your entire site again, because iWeb has re-created all the files, and they will all look "new" to the Mirror command.

    Could that explain the problem?

    Thanks,

I publish to folder every time I make a change in iWeb, then use Fetch to transfer the files. Mirroring has never worked for updating single folders, though. Are you suggesting that the "publish to folder" process negates any chance of mirroring being successful?

    Hi,

No, sorry, I wasn't suggesting that "publish to folder" negates any chance of mirroring being successful.

What I was trying to say was that "publish to folder" was essential to do first, but that the way iWeb's publish to folder feature works negates the advantages of the mirror command. The Mirror command should work, but I would expect it to be uploading all your files again, just as if you had used the Put command.

I'm sorry, but I out of ideas why the Mirror command isn't working as expected for you. The transcript you sent shows that it is uploading files; but it doesn't seem to be uploading them all, and I don't know why that would be.

I will keep thinking on it and let you know if I have further thoughts.

    Thanks,

    Hi Lee,

Based on what you've said so far, it sounds like you may be trying to mirror only some of the subfolders of the folder created by iWeb, not the entire folder. Is that correct?

    Thanks,

Exactly. Just one of the subfolders, actually.

    Hi Lee,

    Okay.

And are you selecting the matching subfolder on the server in the Remote side of the Mirror window when you do that?

Or are you only choosing one of the local subfolders in the Local pane, but leaving the Remote side of the Mirror window alone, so that it still points to the "main" folder on your server?

    Thanks,

I'm choosing the local subfolder in the local pane (left side of the mirror window). I'm leaving the remote side alone.

If I'm remembering correctly, when I do select the remote side, it pulls up my keychain with preset password already filled in.

    Hi Lee,

For the Mirror command to work properly, you need to select exactly matching folders on both the local and the remote side.

So it sounds like the problem is you've selected a subfolder on the local side, but are still using the main folder on the remote (server) side. And when you do that, the Mirror command isn't clever enough to find the matching subfolder on the remote side. You'd have to go find the matching subfolder for it.

So as a result, your changed files are being put into the wrong folder (they aren't replacing the matching files on the server) - and so you never see them.

Typically, you would set up the Mirror window so that you have the main folder containing all your local file on the Local side, and the main server folder on the Remote side. If you did that, I think you'd find that using Mirror worked correctly.

However, as I said, due to the way iWeb works, once you set it up like that, the Mirror command will just upload all your files anyway, so you might as well just use the Put command.

You could use the Put command to just put specific subfolders in the right place on the server, but in my experience, doing partial uploads of an updated iWeb site can lead to other problems. When you're using iWeb, you're generally best off uploading all your files, every time, although I agree that's time consuming.

I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have more questions.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Scott,

That explanation makes the most sense yet. Thank you very much for helping me clarify this. I'll probably just keep using the Put command -- I can always grab a coffee while I wait.

    Hi Lee,

You're welcome. We wish there was a better answer for iWeb users who just want to update the changed files, but unfortunately, the way iWeb creates the files for uploading prevents a quick solution.
