I have a site, paulaxan.com and I have uploaded and cannot view my site. I have tried just uploading the files, not the www.paulaxan.com folder. I can upload files, but there are other folders I need. I do create new folder and it does, but then I get errors (can't copy those "Photos_files" (i.e.) folders or their contents into a created folder. I also get an error about the connection not being active for so many seconds/minutes while it looked like it was trying to do something. What the heck? I am CONfused. Thank you for your help! (I did read some previous entries, but nothing has worked, so I'm wondering if I need to do the transcript thing or if I'm just missing something obvious). I have a site via a pc and Dreamweaver, but this is my first attempt on the mac. I'm failing miserably! Paula

Directnic is where my account is and the name servers are correct. I have two other sites with directnic, so I compared. The other two I update from Dreamweaver and the PC--that's why no problem with those two and here with this one I'm stumped. Does that help you? Thank you!

I have tried just uploading the index.html. No luck. I figure I must have some directory wrong or something. The top of the Fetch window says "www.paulaxan.com -- /". In the box it shows the "index.html" and then folders, including paulaxan.com (or www.paulaxan.com) -- I changed those some to see if that was the problem. I know enough to be dangerous, lol. I was a software engineer (back in the C days) so I think I can just jump in and do these things. Well, I can't because I'm very out of the loop now. I had trouble one other time uploading (and it wasn't in Dreamweaver where I know what to do) and it ended up being a directory/location issue. So I'm suspicious of that. Plus...there's the iWeb thing...I am going back and looking into that a bit too. Transitioning to the Mac has been so wonderful and easy except for web stuff. Thank you again! Paula

    Hi Paula,

You are still having problems, is that correct?

If you are still unable to upload folders, I think that's where we should begin the investigations.

Please let me know where we are on this, and I'll try to help out.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hi Scott,

I am and I have a couple things to try -- just haven't had time to focus on it yet. I will work on it tomorrow and let you know what's up. Changing the preferences to stay connected didn't help. Also, having directnic re-create my folder didn't either. sigh.

    Thank you!

Here's some info for you: (thank you!)

So directnic recreated my folder for paulaxan.com. I even went into iWeb and created a new site (careful not to muck with anything). I published to a folder (it put it in a "PaulaXan" folder). I tried to "Put" it and I get the same error:
Fetch could not create the folder PaulaXan because the FTP server has shut down. Try again or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running. Server responded: Disconnecting since you were inactive for 300 seconds.

So....here's the last part of the lengthy and repetitive transcript:
    257 "/PaulaXan" directory created.
    CWD PaulaXan
    550 No such directory.
    MKD PaulaXan
    257 "/PaulaXan" directory created.
    CWD PaulaXan
    550 No such directory.
    MKD PaulaXan
    257 "/PaulaXan" directory created.
    CWD PaulaXan
421 Disconnecting you since you were inactive for 300 seconds.
    ftp_cwd: 2,-30001 (state == RPUT_ENTERING_DIR)

Okay, I have a couple pages up. I have no idea why. :o Mobile Me wasn't working right, so just nuked it all and created a new site and kept it named "Site" in iWeb. I made a Welcome and Photos page. I published to a folder ("Site"). I then went to Fetch and into the paulaxan.com directory and put welcome, etc. Well, by gosh, it worked!

All I can think of is that I was changing something somewhere that I shouldn't. ???

    Hi Paula,

Based on the transcript you sent, it looks like there was (is?) a problem with the server.

Fetch was asking the server to create a folder, the server said, "I've created the folder," Fetch tried to change to the folder, and the server said, "but there is no folder with that name!" even though seconds earlier the server said it had created it. There's not a lot Fetch can do if the server sends contradictory messages like that - except, eventually, give up on trying to create the folder, which is what happened. And the server definitely shouldn't be doing that; so if it happens again, you should contact the folks who run the server and have them look into it.

I'm glad you were able to upload successfully, so perhaps they fixed the problem with the server. However, I went to www.paulaxan.com and I'm still not seeing your website - but perhaps that's expected.

Anyway, please let us know if you need further assistance.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

I agree about what was going wrong.

We could see the site last night, but my "now unnecessary" directdns stuff messed it up. So I've canceled that and all should be normal again soon. Boy did I make this hard on myself. I'm telling you, knowing enough to be dangerous, is, well...it's dangerous! :o

Thank you for the awesome help here!
