New "FTP Server Dropped the Connection" (17 posts)

I'm running Fetch 5.7.4 on an older Intel Mac, OS 10.6.8.

Never had any problems, now suddenly I cannot connect to any FTP server, including your FetchSoftworks server, and I get the same "FTP Server Dropped the Connection" error regardless of the server.

The transcripts are below. I've narrowed the problem down to the machine (I think), because I'm able to connect on a different machine using the same WI-FI Router and Cable Internet Modem. The only difference is that the desktop machine having the FTP connection problems is connected to the modem by Ethernet cable. The laptop without the FTP connection problems is wireless. But otherwise, they're using the same Internet and FTP accounts across the board, and their Firewall settings are the same, too. Yet the laptop can make the FTP connections, but the Desktop gives the same error message regardless of which FTP server is being accessed.

Last but not least, perhaps. The successful laptop connection transcript does NOT include this line:

    get_reply():con_conn->Getline() returns 1,1

Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Thank you in advance.

    Hi,

Are you running Norton? There are reports that a November 27 update to Norton breaks FTP connections:

    Thanks,

All of a sudden, I am getting the error that the FTB connection is being dropped. I have a full updated Mac. Never had this issue in all the years I've used Fetch.

    Hi Michael,

When you get that error could you choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu and post the contents of that window here, or else submit it at http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/feedback ? That information may help me figure out what to suggest.

    Thanks,

Is this what you are asking for, Jim?
    ftp_tickle: 2,-30001 (state == TICKLING)
Connecting to ftp.mjmalouf.com port 21 (Mac OS X firewall is allowing connections) (12/28/14, 12:54 PM)
    Connected to 66.196.82.114 port 21 (12/28/14, 12:54 PM)
An FTP with TLS/SSL connection to “ftp.mjmalouf.com” could not be opened because the FTP server dropped the connection. (Try again, or contact the server administrator to verify that the server is running.)

It looks like the ftp.mjmalouf.com server is not running. I would recommend contacting your hosting provider for more information about the server's status.

Thank you. That's AT&T. You wouldn't think they would have server issues, would you?

Even big web hosting companies will have server outages at times. Hopefully they can fix the problem promptly.

    Thanks,

Thank you! I am on the phone with them. Where is it again that I enter the settings? It's been so long since I've had to do this!

Okay! Their servers are undergoing maintenance. Thanks! Never happened before.

    Hi,
I used Fetch last night without issue.
Today when logging in it says: If you do not disconnect, your password will be sent over the network in the clear".

    I do I fix this?

    Thanks

You can turn off that warning in the Security section of Preferences (uncheck "Warn before sending password insecurely"). You can ask your server administrator whether they support SFTP or FTP with TLS/SSL, which send passwords securely.

    Hi,
All of a sudden I cannot connect to one particular hosting provider's FTP servers, but I am having NO issue whatsoever connecting to other hosting providers' FTP servers.

The one is question is telling me that I have to set my upload/download prefs to TEXT to override the default MacBinary. I still have no success connecting to this hosting providers' FTP servers after changing the prefs to TEXT.

    Here is the transcript:

    Hi,

    Try the following:

    1) Quit Fetch
    2) In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu
    3) Open Terminal
    4) Paste the following:

defaults write com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch NoMacb -bool true

    and type Return
    5) Open Fetch

    Does that help?

    Thanks,
