I would suggest checking the "Use passive mode transfers" box in the Firewall section of Preferences. Does that improve things?
Thanks,

I had tried passive mode with these firewall settings in the past, but could never sign-on in passive mode. After several more rounds of trial and error with various proxy types available to me with my firewall/ICS software installed on my networked gateway computer (PPPshar), passive mode with proxy type Socks 4.3 seems to work as long as file type automatic is not used. Inconvenient, but liveable compromise.
