It depends on the kind of web server that your site is using. Apache (a popular server) uses two files, .htaccess and .htpasswd. .htpasswd contains the passwords, and .htaccess specifies which passwords are needed for which directories.
You should contact your web service provider to find out how you would do this on their server.

how do you create password protected directories for the information you post to your website... if i want to post some documents to a directory that i only want my client to see, how do i prompt someone entering the directory to enter a password in order to proceed?
