problem with file transfer to NAS (6 posts)

    I'm using fetch to convert .m4a files from my itunes folder onto a NAS drive. I use a mac and I'm transferring wirelessly. It's working beautifully in general, but randomly, perhaps one of fifteen files appears as "plaintext," and of course doesn't work. I've tried transferring again, re-ripping the CD to itunes, etc. Any ideas about what's happening?

    Hi,

    If you could send us a transcript, using the instructions below, we'll take a look and see if we have any suggestions.

    Here's what to do:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Upload one of the problem files again.
    * After the upload completes, go to the View menu, and choose Refresh.
    * Then go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Hi,

    Thanks for posting the transcript.

    It looks like the problem is being caused by the accented characters in the names of those two files - both have a ü (u with an umlaut) in them. After the file is uploaded, the NAS is truncating the name of the file at the ü; so

    on the server. Since the name is losing the .m4a extension, your software can't tell it's an audio file - files without extensions are displayed as "plaintext."

    It looks like the NAS isn't equipped to deal with accented characters in filenames (this isn't uncommon).

    I would recommend renaming the files to remove the accented characters, and then try uploading again and see if that fixes the problem.

    Thanks very much! I haven't tried the fix, but I'm sure it will work. As I think through the movement titles that have been affected, umlauts or other accent marks are the common denominator.
