First - I have no clue what stuff is called, so bear with me. Matter of fact, I should have my head examined for trying this without professional help... oh... that's you, so we're good.

Question: I have seven domain names, paid all the junk that goes with it including hosting... downloaded Fetch... use iMac, have six websites started on iWeb. Set up my root and paths for each, w/ folders waiting.

If I click on Fetch, it gives me this mess of harddrive files w/ no iWeb or names of my saved web pages listed... and if I click "publish now" in file iWeb - how can I know it won't pull all my different web sites up to one folder? I do have six different iWeb red boxes with little puffy clouds/popcorn/cotton balls, and if I cursor over the top one, it shows blue highlight. Will that automatically pull the contents (pages), or will it grab them all?? I hear it's a bear to unpublish a mess.... help!!

    Hi,

In order to upload iWeb-created sites with Fetch, yes, you must use the "publish" feature in iWeb to publish your website to a folder on your hard drive. (You need to change the publish settings to "publish to local folder" instead of publishing to MobileMe.) Unless you do that, the website is stored inside iWeb in a format that Fetch cannot access.

It sounds like you're using iWeb 3.0, part of iLife '09, is that correct? If so, for each site, you can publish each one to a separate folder. (This was not true for earlier versions of iWeb, which would publish all sites to one folder.) Select the cloud icon for each site, choose "Publish to: Local Folder," (at which point the cloud icon will change to a folder), select the folder to publish it to - you should select a different folder for each site, so they don't get mixed together - and only the pages from that site will be published to that folder. Then you can upload the sites from each folder to a different domain using Fetch.

I hope this helps clarify things.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I'm also working in iweb version 2.3. my problem is that when I upload through fetch some java stuff doesn't show up on the web, such as the navbar and photo frames. They're 'widgets' so they say!

I thought it was the server end but they said the java was getting corrupted in the ftp. I'm not sure. Could it be Fetch? Any assistance would be greatful.

    Hi Gary,

I took a look at your website and it's not a case of the JavaScript getting corrupted on upload; the problem seems to be that certain files (such as the one making up the navbar) simply aren't there, which is why some things aren't showing up.

Fetch will upload every file inside the folders you ask it to upload; there's nothing that would cause it to skip over certain files and not upload them. So I think the files must not have been published from iWeb properly.

I think the best thing is to clean things out and start over and see if that fixes the problem.

    * First, you should move the files and folders created when you previously used iWeb's Publish to Folder command to the Trash.
    * Next, connect to the server with Fetch, and delete the files on the server. This will temporarily disable your webpage.
    * Then, create a new folder on the Mac, and use iWeb's Publish to Folder command to put your website files in that folder.
    * Then upload the contents of that folder to your server.

And see if that fixes the problem.

    Thanks,

Thanks Scott. Your help led me to solve the issue. I did what you said, as well as upload the files directly into the html folder on the server, instead of the web folder within the html folder. Also, as I'm building the website on my iMac and transfering all the files via USB stick to the eMac which Fetch is on, I think my stick may have been corrupting the files. So I burned the website's files onto a CD and took that across. Both these things made it work.

I know that's the long way around so I think I'll download Fetch now to work off my iMac after all that hassel.

    cheers,
    Gary

    Hi Scott,

pretty new at all of this. I've been using Fetch to upload an iWeb-created website and it's all gone great so far.
Decided to add the iWeb blog page to the site a couple of days ago, but each time I try and publish it to my site, nothing happens.

    Can you help? Thanks.

    Hi Adam,

When you say "nothing happens" what exactly do you mean? Do you get an error when uploading your revised website? Or is the website uploaded successfully, but you don't see your new blog pages?

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,
it's the second of those two options. The site seems to publish successfully but there is no sign at all of the blog page.

    Hi Adam,

The first thing I'd suggest is emptying your web browser's cache to make sure you're seeing the latest version of your webpages. To do this in Safari:

    * Go to the Safari menu, and choose Empty Cache.
    * Safari will ask you if you're sure. Click the Empty button.
    * Then go to your website address, and view your website to see if the blog posts show up.

If that doesn't seem to be the problem, then what may have happened is that you uploaded the new copy of your website into a different folder than your existing website, so it didn't replace your existing website, and you're still seeing the old copy of your website.

It's hard to give specific directions on how to check to see if that happened. But if you can do give us two pieces of information, I can try to see if that's the case.

First, what is the address of your website?

    Second, please do the following:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Go to the View menu, and choose Refresh.
    * Then go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

We'll take a look and see if we can advise.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

can you give me a private email address to send this info to? I'll continue to use the message board afterwards.

PS - I emptied the cache and refreshed the page - doesn't seem to be the problem.
