Stalling every time (frustrated) (10 posts)

fetch keeps stalling when uploading files to a server.
I am uploading medium to large movie files ranging from 50mb to 1gb.

I have read all the threads on here and have taken the advise given by fetch support which do not solve my problem.

I have tried by SFTP and FTP, ive tried with passive mode on and off.

To give you a bit of info: if im using passive checked the upload usaly stalls inbetween the transfer, if i uncheck passive mode then the stall takes place after 1 file has finished before the next one starts.

    Im using OS 10.4.8.
Im based in Spain and the server im connecting to is based in the States.
I am connected to the internet with ethernet cable.

Maybe its something im doing wrong, my fire wall is active with all access unchecked. should i be checking the FTP access section in my fire wall? will this allow other people to hack into my cpu over the net?

Im not a wizzard with these things but i really need to be able to upload without stalls.

Another thing, the speed? i have a 3meg download speed and only a 320kbs upload speed. i can never get a faster upload speed than 32kbs. is this normal?

Im not blaming Fetch for this as i have tried another FTP client and experienced the same problem.

Is this problem an issue with Mac or am i doing something wrong?

    Any help will be apprectaited.....

    Hi Pilky,

I'll start with the easy questions first.

Regarding the upload speed: Fetch measures speeds in kilobytes - denoted by capital KB/s - whereas Internet connections are rated in kilobits - denoted with lowercase kb/s. A kilobyte is 8 kilobits. So to compare the speed Fetch is telling you with your connection's maximum speed, you need to multiple the Fetch figure by 8.

So if Fetch says your upload speed in 32 KB/s, that's equivalent to 196 kb/s. On an Internet connection with a 320 kb/s maximum upload speed, that's within the normal range of what you can expect (you will almost never see better than 75% of the maximum upload speed). For more information about upload and download speeds, see the Why is uploading slower than downloading? topic in Fetch Help (or click the link here).

Since you are able to make some transfers, the firewall settings do not need to be changed. If the firewall was interfering, you would not be able to connect to the server or even start transfers. So you shouldn't have to worry about that. Are you using the firewall that is built into Mac OS X?

Unfortunately, if you are seeing stalls with both Fetch and other FTP clients, it's likely that they are being caused by a problem that is out of your control. It may be a problem with the server you are uploading to, or it may be an issue with your DSL/cable modem. But we can try to investigate a little to see if we can isolate the problem.

It sounds like the stalls always happen after one file has finished transferring, and before another one starts. Is that correct?

Do you see this problem when uploading to just this server, or other servers too?

If you post a transcript of a transfer that has stalled, we'll take a look at it and see if we have any further suggestions. To do this, after your transfer stalls, choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

    Thanks for the quick responce.
I understand more now about the upload speed.

To answer your questions: yes im using the fire wall built in with OS 10.

Im uploading to 2 different servers and get the same problem.

If i use passave mode checked then the stalls can happen at any point of the uploading. if i use passave mode unchecked then the stall usally happens at the end of a file.

I will send you the transcript info of the stalls.

    Thanks for the support.

    Hi Pilky,

If you can, please send us the transcript of a stall with passive mode checked. And please make sure you have Fetch 5.2, the latest version of Fetch.

Are the two servers you have problems with related, that is, run by the same person or company?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    Hello Scott,

Is there an email address i can send the transcript to rather than posting it on the forum, the contents are sensitive.

    Thanks
    Pilky.
