Stalls on 1st upload, OSX Tiger (8 posts)

    Hi there.

    I did a brief search of the forum, but couldn't locate an answer to my problem.

    I upgraded to Tiger, and this was when the problem started. I was using v5.0.2 of Fetch.

    I have since initialized my HD due to other problems relating to the upgrade, reinstalled Tiger and upgraded to v5.0.5.

    I am not using a firewall, and passive mode is turned on in Fetch Prefs.

    The problem is that THE FIRST TIME I upload files Fetch stalls, and often crashes. This happens if I drag & drop OR try to upload via the "Put" command. Upload type is set to automatic.

    When I click the stop button, Fetch takes 1~2 minutes to recover, but then I can upload files, and it works fine after that. If I have to restart Fetch, the first upload doesn't work again.

    An inspection of the log shows that when Fetch crashes, no entry -- to my untrained eye -- seems to be made in the log.

    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I like Fetch, but this flaky behavior is not what I've been accustomed to from what I consider a high-quality product.

    Hi,

    We're sorry you're having problems. We haven't heard of a similar problem before, so we'd certainly like to investigate and help resolve the problem.

    First, could you try downloading the Fetch 5.1b2 public beta, and let us know if you see the same problem with it? You can download it here: http://getfetch.com/Fetch_5.1b2.dmg .

    If that doesn't solve the problem, could you please do the following? After you experience the stall, click the Stop bottom, and it finally recovers - assuming Fetch doesn't crash - please choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and post them here.

    If Fetch does crash, check again for a Fetch.crash.log file in the CrashReport folder in the Logs folder in the Library folder of your Home folder. If you fine one, please email it to us at:

    bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com

    If you don't find one, run the Console application and look at console.log and system.log and see if you see any Fetch-related information; the lines should be labelled with "Fetch" at the beginning. If you see anything, post it here or email it to us.

    OK Sorry it's taken me so long to reply -- hectic week.

    Here is the Fetch Transcript. The transcript shows downloading the "placeholder documents" and uploading my client's actual site documents. The transcript shows successful upload, but the hang-up occurs before that.

    PS -- I just re-read your response, and I didn't download the 5.1 beta.

    Also, how do you recommend preserving shortcut data? I normally move the "shortcut" file from the library to the desktop, install/reinstall the program, then replace the "shortcut" file. Could this be part of the problem?

    Hi,

    Thanks for the transcript. I don't see anything indicating what the problem might be in your transcript; please try the beta and let us know what happens.

    Reinstalling or upgrading Fetch shouldn't affect your shortcuts, so you probably don't need to be moving it out each time, although it certainly never hurts to make a backup copy (in which case you could copy it, instead of move it, to the Desktop). What you're doing is fine, although you should do it when Fetch isn't running. I don't think moving the shortcut file is contributing to this problem.

    Hello again --

    I upgraded to the beta version listed earlier in this thread, and it also hangs on the first upload, as with previous versions.

    Are there any known conflicts? What can I do to troubleshoot this?

    As a temporary workaround I would recommend closing the Fetch transfer window when it stalls (rather than clicking the Stop button). Then open a new connection and try again. Does the first upload with the new window fail?

    Do you have any third party networking or security software installed on this computer? Have you tried a different FTP client, such as Interarchy or the command line client in Terminal?

    Hello -- closing the connection window and opening a new connection when it stalls is a functional work-around. The new connection works correctly. As a bonus, it's a lot faster than clicking the stop button.

    I am not running any software firewall, however, my DSL runs through the wired 100baseT hub portion of a wireless router, which does have a firewall, but to my knowledge, it is not enabled. It's a Belkin model F5D7231-4P.
