Strange "Kind" 'Radiance' type in Leopard (6 posts)

    When upload a file to a Unix system with an extension of '.hdr', Fetch 5.3 assigns a file type of "Radiance" and attempting to edit the file launches Graphic Converter instead of Text Wrangler. And even the info window won't allow one to specific a program to edit the file - it seems determined to require graphic converter. Any idea how to change this?

    Hi,

    I was unable to duplicate this behavior on my Mac - while the Finder and Fetch did say that a file with an extension of .hdr was a PhotoShop Radiance file, the "Edit files like this with" menu in the Fetch info window did offer an "Other" option that allowed me to choose TextWrangler as the editor for .hdr files.

    So I'd like some more information to try to figure out what is going on.

    Does your "Edit files like this with" menu in the info window not have an "Other" option when you get info on an .hdr file?

    What does the Finder (not Fetch) say the Kind of the file is?

    And which version of Mac OS X are you using?

    Thanks,

    Hello,

    Thanks for quick response. If downloaded through Fetch, the finder doesn't attempt to assign a file type. It is just a plain document.

    Within the info window, "Edit files like this with" does not appear. The window stops after "Open files like this with:" and I have it set to TextWrangler. In Fetch's prefs, I have attempted to set the upload to default to text. That doesn't seem to have an effect on these files.

    Hi,

    I would try doing the following:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * In the Finder, select an .hdr file and get info on it.
    * In the Finder's info window, go to the Open With section, choose TextWrangler from the menu, and then click the Change All button.
    * Open Fetch.
    * Connect to the server, select a .hdr file, and get info on it.
    * See if an "Edit files like this with" menu appears in the Fetch info window now.

    Have you been able to successfully set and use TextWrangler for editing other kinds of files in Fetch?

    Thanks,

    Hi again,

    I'll answer your last question first: yes, I can set and use TextWrangler to edit other types of files.

    I have followed your steps and I still cannot see an "Edit files like this with" section in the Info window. Interestingly enough, using a different Mac (running OS 10.4.11, Fetch 5.2), there an "Edit files like this with" section in the Info window.

    I have also tried trashing prefs and reinstalling Fetch from scratch.

    Thanks.
