    Hi, I am getting this message when I try to access my fetch file folders: "Could not get file list because there was a time out trying to establish a passive mode data connection."

    I have never seen this message and don't know what to do. I would call this an emergency at this point. Can you help? Thanks.

    Hi Kim,

    Have you been able to connect successfully using Fetch to this server before? Or is this the first time you have tried to connect to this particular server?

    Try doing the following:

    * Click the Cancel button in the New Connection dialog.
    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click the General tab if you're using Fetch 5, or the Proxy tab if you're using Fetch 4.
    * Uncheck the "Use passive mode transfers" checkbox if it is checked, or check it if it is unchecked.
    * Try connecting to your server again.

    If this does not help, please send us a Fetch transcript from an attempt to connect, and we'll see if we have further suggestions. To do this:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Try to connect to your server.
    * Go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Thank you so much for responding. Wanted to answer your first question right away. I have been connecting to this server for about three years.
    Thanks again, and I will try your suggestions, Scott.

    Try doing the following:

    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * Click the General tab if you're using Fetch 5, or the Proxy tab if you're using Fetch 4.
    * Uncheck the "Use passive mode transfers" checkbox if it is checked, or check it if it is unchecked.
    * Try connecting to your server again.

    If this does not help, please send us a Fetch transcript from an attempt to connect, and we'll see if we have further suggestions. To do this:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Try to connect to your server.
    * Go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Hi,

    If you have been able to connect successfully previously, it may be that they have made some change to the server that is causing this problem, or that some change has occurred to your network that is causing the problem. Have you changed routers or wireless base stations, or upgraded their software, recently?

    However, I see that you are using Fetch 5.2, so the next thing I would try is to get version 5.3, and see if that helps. (It's a free upgrade for you, but if you don't want to replace your current copy of Fetch, you could just install Fetch 5.3 someplace else temporarily to try it.)

    Please let us know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    I am having the exact same problem as npiadmin. I completed all of the suggestions but am still receiving the same error message.
    Any more suggestions?

    Hi JmBrignac,

    We'd like some information to help diagnose your problem.

    Are you getting the time out when you try to connect, when you try to open a folder, or when you try to upload or download?

    Have you been able to successfully work with this server previously?

    And finally, we'd like to see a transcript in order to try to give more suggestions. Could you please post one?

    The instructions to do that are:

    * Quit Fetch, if it's running.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Try to connect to your server.
    * Go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them into a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

    I have been using Fetch for several years and have never encountered this type of problem....any problem for that matter.

    The problem is occurring when I try to connect. I have check and uncheck my PASV option. I have even reinstalled the software.

    One day I was able to connect and the next...nothing!

    Please Help!
    Jennifer

    Hi Jennifer,

    Thanks for the transcript.

    Can you connect successfully to the Fetch Softworks ftp server? To try this, enter ftp.fetchsoftworks.com in the hostname, and leave the username and password blank.

    This will help determine whether the problem is just with that one server, or a more general problem that may be being caused by your network equipment.

    One thing to try is to shut down your Mac, and unplug your router and cable/DSL modem. Then plug the cable/DSL modem (wait about a minute for it to get completely started up), then the router (wait another minute for it), and then start your Mac. Then try connecting to the problem server. We find that this sometimes solves problems like these.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

    We started experiencing this exact issue when we installed a cisco
    RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN

    I am trying to determine why this router would cut off the connection to an FTP server when trying to generate an ascii listing of all the files. in the current directory.

    I know that this is Router specific because I have been able to isolate the issue with just this router.
    My other routers did not show this behavior.

    And rebooting the routers did not help.

    When connecting to an FTP site or doing a refresh of the current directory the FTP it will list a portion of the files then return an error stating

    "Could not get file list because connection was reset by the file server"

    I have however eliminated the file server as the issue because it is only this router that has an issue communicating.

    I have turned off and on settings. in Firewall -> Basic Settings
    but to no help.

    THere are many more files in the folder starting with letters higher than "i".
    But this router cuts off the connection before it will list them.

    I have noticed the same behavior in Dreamweaver as well as Fetch.

    Hi UCNRS,

    Which version of Fetch are you using?

    That transcript shows that you are connecting in active mode; have you tried connecting in passive mode?

    If not, please do the following:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Go to the Fetch menu, and choose Preferences.
    * In the General pane, put a checkmark next to "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" checkbox. If there is already a checkmark next to it, let us know.
    * Try connecting to the server again.

    And post the transcript from that attempt.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire
