trial version not working? (5 posts)

I downloaded the 15 day trial at a client's office. I was teaching them FTP to update their website. We logged on fine, and uploaded one file which appeared in the file list on Fetch. But it wasn't displaying on the website. It's not a caching issue. I used different FTP s/w on my PC and can see that the new file is NOT on the ISP server. Is there something about the trial software that I don't know?

    Hi,

We're sorry you had problems with Fetch. The trial version's functionality is not limited in any way, and it does not show files as uploaded when it has not uploaded them.

It sounds like what may have happened is that the file was uploaded to a different directory than you expected when you used Fetch. Did you see the rest of the website's files when you connected with Fetch?

Another possibility is that when you clicked on Put, the "Pick a different name" option was selected from the "If the file already exists" menu. On some servers, that may cause the file to be put with a random name, so the file may have been there, but under a new name.

Usually we'd ask you to send a transcript so we could investigate and tell you what happened, but since you're not at the client's office anymore, I assume that's not an option. But let us know if you would like to look into it further.

And please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

Me again... just to add more information. I performed the TRIAL download on Feb 2nd so it is the latest version. I can't experiment with Fetch, as I don't have a Mac, my client does. The client had downloaded a trial version in July last year and not used it - would this be relevant? The connection to the ISP server worked perfectly. Firstly I tried dragging and dropping the new image file to Fetch which looked like it worked, but didn't display the image. (checked cache and refresh) Then I performed "GET" function and new image appeared in the image list, but still did not display. As I said previously, using other FTP software on my pc, I see that the new image is NOT on the ISP server. I hope I've let you know all I can.... and have a nice day! Cheers.

Thank you Scott! How's that for synchronicity - we posted in the same moment! Thank you for your response. The name of the image stayed the same, well we saw it there in Fetch looking as it should. And it was in the Images folder with the other images as we wanted. The remainder of the site was showing as expected as well. And when I look on my SmartFTP on my pc, the new image file does not appear, neither does any file with a weird name. Mysterious. It's the weekend already here in Australia. I'll get the client to post a transcript to you on Monday... hopefully I'll know how to do that without visiting them again. Cheers have a great weekend!

    Hi,

The client having downloaded a trial version last year (and not run it) shouldn't have affected anything.

If you dragged and dropped, the "Pick a different name" option shouldn't have been used, and you've confirmed that the file was the expected name.

It's very odd that Fetch would show you the file, in the correct location, but the other FTP client wouldn't. Did you try closing the connection (by closing the window) and reconnecting with Fetch to see if it still showed the file in question? If not, can your client try that?

You say "neither does any file with a weird name." Did the image you were uploading have a "weird name?" Some servers cannot hand files that have any odd characters in them.

And here's how to get a transcript: after connection and uploading the file, choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, and then copy the contents of the transcript window.

    Thanks,
