Upload keeps stalling (11 posts)

    Yesterday I had to try 8 times to get revised website uploaded. Kept stalling...the dog was running but nothing moving. Would stall on different items...never the same item. Finally it took.

    Today I had to make a change. Same problem. Now have tried several times, same thing. And because I stopped it at a page called News and Information, that entire page is blank on the website. (I emptied the cache.)

    I did receive an error message saying "ftp server dropped the connection" but that was the only message. Mostly it simply got kind of "stuck".

    Can you help?

    Hi,

    Are these new problems?

    That is, have you previously uploaded your website to this server before, and not had stalls?

    Thanks,

    I have not had this problem before. One other time it disconnected but other than that, no problems. Since my post I have tried again several times. Same thing.

    Hi,

    It could be that the server is having problems.

    However, please try the following steps to see if they fix the problem; even though they are basic troubleshooting steps, we find that sometimes these steps solve stalling problems.

    * Shut down your Mac.
    * Unplug your router or wireless base station.
    * Unplug your cable/DSL modem.
    * Plug the cable/DSL modem back in, and wait about a minute for it to get completely started up.
    * Then plug the router back in, and wait another minute for it.
    * Finally, start your Mac.

    Then try connecting and uploading to the problem server.

    If this does not help, let us know.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

    Thanks but it didn't work. Same problem. Is the server
    GoDaddy which hosts the website? Or is the server Fetch?
    I only know what I know and this whole thing kind of confuses me.

    What should I do next?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

    The server is run by GoDaddy. (The server is another computer; Fetch just makes the computer program that lets you move your webpage files from your Mac to that other computer.)

    Sorry to hear that didn't help. Let's do this next:

    * Quit Fetch.
    * Open Fetch again.
    * Connect to your server.
    * Try uploading again.
    * After the connection stalls and the server drops the connection, go to the Window menu, and choose Fetch Transcript.
    * Copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and send them in an email message to:

    bb at fetchsoftworks dot com

    And we'll take a look and try to give further advice.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

    I did what you said but this time it didn't stall. It uploaded eveything in the folder. Didn't stall once.

    However, there is an important page missing which is still missing from the last time I tried to send but it stalled.

    I will probably have to call GoDaddy tomorrow and ask them to walk me through this.

    But, if you look at the website www.seniorsoncapecod.org, and click into "News and Information" you should see a blank page. I can't figure out why it's blank. I checked the folder and everything there is correct and it seemed to upload correctly this time.

    If you have any other advice, it would be welcome.

    Thanks for your help,
    Ellen

    Hi,

    I'm not sure why that page is blank either; it's not missing completely - otherwise you'd get an error when you tried to go to it - but it is blank.

    You might want to try uploading just that page (instead of the whole website) again; while generally we advise against trying to upload just parts of iWeb created websites, in this case it might be worth a try.

    To do this, open up the same folders on both the Mac and in the Fetch window (the organization should be identical) to find the file in both places, and then drag the file from your Mac to the same place that file is in the Fetch window.

    After you upload it, go to the page in Safari, and if you still see a blank page, go to Safari's View menu and choose Reload Page before being sure it didn't work.

    I hope this helps - let me know. And if the stalls come back, we'll see what we can do to help work around them.

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

    First of all, thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it.

    I did what you said and it didn't work. I called GoDaddy and after much moving stuff around and trying different things, I got the page back! I have no clue how.

    However, in the process of working with Go Daddy we tried to upload through Fetch again. It stalled 3/4 of the way through.

    Right now the website is correct but the stalling continues. GoDaddy said the problem is not with them
    and that it could be with Verizon dsl which keeps dropping the connection. Do you think it might be a Verizon dsl problem?

    Or do you have any other suggestions as I usually make website changes like once every few weeks.

    Thanks again,
    Ellen

    Hi Ellen,

    Yes, it could be a problem with Verizon DSL. Or - no offense to GoDaddy - it could be a problem with them, despite what their support says on the phone.

    I have sent you an email with a further suggestion about dealing with stalls; let me know if you don't receive the email.

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire
