Uploading a webpage made using quark 6 (13 posts)

Can anyone help? I want to set up a simple webpage with some text, two photos and a link to another website. I am new to this so have just tried creating a simple html file layout using quark 6.

This layout exports fine in explorer but I want to upload the page to the webspace I have via my email provider. I have uploaded the html file in Fetch (using 'Put File') but when I go to my webspace there is nothing there. Am I missing out a vital stage?

At a later date I would like to add a link to my webpage so I can move through to another website. How would I go about doing this using Fetch?

You can see I'm completely new to this!!

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

The usual cause of an uploaded webpage not appearing is that it has been uploaded to the wrong folder. (On many servers, the files that make up your website must go in a specially named folder, for example, one named "public_html", "htdocs", or "www" — the exact name of the folder will depend on your server.)

If you could send us some more information, we may be able to help you figure out what the problem is.

First, what is the address of your website?

    Second, please do the following:

Quit Fetch, then open it again, and connect to your server. Upload your test html page. Then choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them in a reply to this message.

    Thanks,

    Hi

    Many thanks for your help.

My web provider is www.demon.co.uk and my webpage is www.harker.demon.co.uk.

I have done as you suggest and am copying the transcript window below.

    Thanks again

    Hi,

At some point, did you try uploading a different test webpage?

    When I connect to

    http://www.harker.demon.co.uk

I see an "Index" folder which has a webpage named "Export1.html" in it, and if I click on it, it shows a picture of a young child. Is this something you tried uploading at some point?

What's odd is that Fetch is not showing the same thing - it only shows an index.html file, instead of an "Index" folder - even though I believe, after reading Demon's help pages, that you are connecting to the correct place.

What happens if you connect to your server in Fetch, and you click the Refresh button? Do you still see the "index.html" page, or do you see an "Index" folder?

    Thanks,

    Scott McGuire

Hi, yes, sorry. I had a bit of a play around yesterday as someone said the file should be called 'index' to be recognised. It still doesn't seem to work though.

I've just uploaded the page again. It should now have a bit of text and two (dummy) images. These are of a child, but just dummy pics for now.

I'm not sure what you mean about connecting to the server in Fetch. Please can you clarify?

If it's any help, I'm pasting the transcript window again for the latest upload.

    Many thanks

    Hi Scott

Some progress... I've just had a look at www.harker.demon.co.uk via internet explorer and I can see the index file and bring up the sample webpage. Excellent! It doesn't seem to load in safari though – does it just work in explorer? How can I ensure that all users will be able to access it?

Also, how do I get the webpage to come up straight away, instead of having to click on the files that are shown?

I think we're getting there but it's just trying to figure out what's going wrong!

    Thanks again

    Hi,

The pages come up for me okay in Safari, after I click on "Index" and then on "Export1.htm". Maybe you just need to reload the pages in Safari?

Here's what I think you need to do to make your webpage come up straight away when you go to www.harker.demon.co.uk :

    * If you look inside the "Index" folder, you see an "Export1.htm" file and an "image" folder. Instead of putting those two inside an "Index" folder and uploading that, you should just upload them directly to your website.
    * Second, the "Export1.htm" file should be renamed "index.htm" or "index.html" (I believe either should work).

Let me know if that works,

    Hi again

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! That seems to be working in explorer now fine (although the images aren't coming up - perhaps I need to rethink how I put those on?)

I still can't get it in safari. I just get two indexes from 4 October and no links to take me through. I'll ask some friends to try from remote machines though and see how we're getting on.

I know quark isn't your remit here, but do you know how to add a link to a quark webpage? I've got some instructions on a link to add to my own webpage that will take me to the site we need. I may come back to you on this in a few days if I'm still having trouble??

Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate it. I had no idea how to move forward before!

    Hi,

I can confirm that your webpage now shows up directly, in Safari, on two different machines.

The photos are also showing up properly for me, both in Safari and Explorer; it looks like you're using JPEG files for them, which shouldn't be a problem.

To try to get your webapge to show up in your Safari, I'd try the following: quit Safari; open Safari again; go to www.harker.demon.co.uk; go to the View menu, and choose Reload Page.

If that doesn't work, I'd go to the Safari menu, choose Empty Cache, quit Safari, open Safari, and try visiting the page again. If it still doesn't show up properly for you after that, I'm not sure what to suggest, but it looks fine to me.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Quark at all, sorry, I've never used it.

    Best,

    Hi again

I've just come back to my machine after a day away and it's now loading straight away in safari! Must have been a glitch. Other friends have been able to access it too. I'm really pleased to have got to the bottom of this. Now I can actually start to create the real webpage! Thanks again for all the help. Invaluable!!!
