Using iWeb from MAC and Fetch — Fetch Message Board

I am using iWeb from Mac to create my webpage. It is done. I published it to a folder, logged onto Fetch, and uploaded it. Now the files are there. I have acquired a server to host the site, and a site name. But I am not sure what that final step is to make the website "go." Help.

Hi,

Once you have uploaded your files to the correct location on the server, they should now just appear when you type in your website's address into a browser.

If that is not happening now, here are two things to try:

(1) Usually you want to upload the contents of the folder created by iWeb, but not the folder itself, to your server in order to make the website appear correctly.

(2) Check with your hosting provider and see if you need to put files in a special folder on the server to make them appear properly in a web browser.

If you've tried these things and neither one works, send us the address of your website and we'll take a look and try to figure out what's going on.

OK, I also have another site on this server, www.jackfitzpatrick.com, and I used fetch to get that going as well. I remember running into problems when i put that up, but I forget how I figured it out. I created a public_html folder as I did on that site to see if that would work, but it didn't. The site I am trying to get running is www.apachewrestling.com. I tried reloading the files outside of the folder, but that didn't work either.

Hi,

I looked at the URL for the new site and I didn't see your files anywhere (or a public_html folder) - did you delete them when they didn't work? If not, you may be connecting and uploading to the wrong folder altogether.

From looking at your URL, it's not obvious what needs to be done to fix the problem; probably the best best is contact your hosting provider and ask what location the files should be uploaded to in order to make them work.

I am having the same problem, after I create page from iweb, and publish and load them to fetch. I do not see them on the website..I also just 'got' the files and not the folder, is there something else to do?

Hi premkrush,

We'd like some more information to help diagnose the problem.

Could you send us the URL to your website?

And then could you please connect to your server, choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu, copy the entire contents of the transcript window, and paste them here

We'll take a look and try to figure out what's going on.

Hi premkush,

The list of files currently on the server does not look right; it doesn't look like they came from iWeb.

When you use iWeb's "Publish to Folder" command, it will create a bunch of files and folders. It will also ask you to choose a folder to put them in. I may have been unclear above; you should upload all the files and folders that iWeb creates, just don't upload the folder that you selected as the place to put those files.

You should upload the files and folders created by iWeb exactly as iWeb creates them - do not rearrange them, do not rename them.

To upload these files using Fetch, either use the Put button, and then select the files, or drag the files and folders from the Finder to the Fetch window displaying the contents of your server.

hi. echoing the problems above. i've created a temporary landing page in iweb. i published it to folder. logged onto fetch, put files and the site will not launch.
please help a man dangerously on the edge.

Hi Ryan,

The most common problem when trying to upload pages created with iWeb is that for your website to work correctly once you upload it, after you publish your website to a folder, you need to upload the contents of the folder - but not the folder itself - to your server.

For example, let's assume your website is called "Family Trip", and when you use "Publish to a Folder," you tell iWeb to put its files in a folder called "My New Website."

Once iWeb is done, in the Finder you will see:

My New Website (folder)
index.html
Family Trip (folder)

Inside the "Family Trip" folder will be folders and files corresponding to each page of your website.

For your website to work correctly, you must be sure to upload both that index file, and the website folder - that is, upload the entire contents of the "My New Website" folder, but don't upload the "My New Website" folder itself.

Do not rearrange or rename files before uploading, or your website will stop working.

It may be best to delete the files that you've already uploaded to the server and start fresh before trying again.

We have a help topic on using Fetch to upload websites created with iWeb (click the link to read it) - it has tips and covers a lot of possible problems that you might be running into, and it may be helpful to read it over if you haven't already.

If you're still having problems after looking this over, please let us know and we'll try to figure it out.
