  What server are you trying to connect to (i.e. what name are you entering in the Hostname field of the New Connection dialog)?

  Knology was bought out by WOW! (or (Wowway) a couple of years ago, but it appears that the web page that Knology provided to email customers may no longer be available. The kid who tried to help me figure this out has sent a request for help up the chain of command. They are supposed to call me back some time this week.

  You're on the right track -- if WOW! owns Knology, they are the ones who control who can and can't log into that server.
