All Fetch programs are not working (9 posts)

    Hello,

    Please help.

I have been using Fetch since Fetch 3(?) way back in 1999. I have used it a lot the past few days -- using a version prior to 5.05 (latest).

Suddenly it was not working today, when I restarted my computer. I tried an old Fetch 4.03, 5.02, etc. and none of them worked either.

Also, why does it say sometimes "The application 'softheinter' has unexpectedly quit" aside from the usual
"The application 'Fetch' has unexpectedly quit"???

I wonder what has been causing these. Note that for the past week, I have uploaded several GB of files (text, pics, etc). My connection was still slow (using cable especially during day) and I opened multiple connections from one server to another in my websites.

Does Fetch have some sort of a cache that need to be cleared or something?

Please help. I need Fetch urgently. I am upgrading my website and I need to tranfer stuff from one server to another.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Sorry you're having troubles.

I am not sure why you get a message about "softheinter" instead of "Fetch." But try doing the following:

    * Choose "Home" from the Go menu in the Finder
    * Open the Library folder
    * Open the Preferences folder
    * Find the Fetch Prefs, Fetch Cache, and com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch.plist files, and move them to your Desktop.

Then try to run Fetch. Does that fix the problem? If so, please email the three files you moved to the Desktop to us at:

    bugs at fetchsoftworks dot com

so that we can figure out why they make Fetch crash.

If that does not fix the problem, let us know and we'll investigate further.

    Hi,

You may also want to restart your Mac using the CD or DVD that came with it, and running Disk Utility to check to make sure the disk does not need repairs.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Scott,

It worked even with just the first solution. I did not have to go to the second set of solutions that you suggested. I thought second approach might not be needed because there is a note that stated that the other applications were not affected.

It looks like moving those corrupted files in the desktop also erased all the stored shortcuts -- but that should be easy to restore.

    Thanks again.

    Sincerely,

    CGC

    N.B.

I donwloaded your latest version 5.05. However, it says that it is for OS 10.4 my computer is Version 10.3.9 though quite near is quite different from 10.4. Does the new version 5.0.5 work with 10.3.9?

I wanted to try this because, since I started with the v 5 series. When I do direct edit on the file using the Fetch edit option, once I save, I get multiple windows of the Fetch.

I have another question, but it is totally unrelated, so I will post it as a separate thread.

    Hi,

I'm glad moving the files solved your problem. Please send the old files to us if you still have them, so we can analyze them and try to prevent crashes in the future.

Moving those files should not have made your shortcuts go away, although it would have removed the list of recent connections. If you moved the file named "Fetch Shortcuts" to your desktop, quit Fetch, and then copy it back to your Preferences folder. That should restore them.

Fetch 5.0.5 works on Mac OS X 10.2.4 and later, so yes, it will definitely work fine with Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Could you please tell us more about your editing problem if you are still seeing it? You can either tell us about it here, or in another thread.

    Thanks,

    Thanks Scott,

I am glad the new version will work for my computer.

I will send through the link you gave me earlier the files. I assume I just attach them?

Most likely, the main reason was that I abused the program recently. I have to "transfer" several GB of files from one server to another. The process was very slow, even with cable connection. So, what I did was open multiple Fetch windows, one from a source and its pair for the recipient server. It helped a bit for a few days. But, the day before I posted this, it was so slow.

In regard my current edit issue -- it is more an annoyance. When I click to save corrections I made directly on the online file, sometimes I accidentally click it more than once, and as a result, another new Fetch browser will open up. In an earlier version of Fetch 5, it just started creating infinite numbers of the Fetch window until it froze my computer.

Sometimes, I have several Fetch window open (same domain but in different directory locations -- like when I am moving stuff around or want to find what files are in one directory while I am checking another). When I have several Fetch windows open, the moment I save a file that I am editing, it will change the directory of one or more of the other Fetch windows to the directory of the saved file.

As a result, I have to keep on closing extra Fetch windows, or have to change the directory settings of another Fetch window to access a separate file I am working on.

I hope you get the idea.

    Thanks again.

In the Finder, select them and choose File > Create Archive - this will create a single zip archive. Then just attach that zip file to an email, and remind us that you're sending them because they made Fetch 5.0.5 crash. Thanks!

Yes, unfortunately, if you choose save again while Fetch is still uploading the from a previous save on the same file, it will open another connection. That is on our list of things to fix, but we do not have an estimate of when it will be fixed. In the meantime, the best advice I can give is to try not to click extra times!

But if you are still seeing the infinite number of Fetch windows being created in 5.0.5, please let us know.

This is a bug we have fixed for Fetch 5.1. If you want you can download the Fetch 5.1b2 public beta, give it a try, and let us know if it's an improvement. You can download Fetch 5.1b2 from http://getfetch.com/Fetch_5.1b2.dmg .

    Thanks for the feedback,

Thanks for the detailed response Scott and the new info. I downloaded and tested the test version 5.12b. I posted my initial key observation about the test version in another thread in the Fetch Feedback forum.

I will respond to the other issues you raised above, as I have time to test or do them.

    Thanks again.
