Fetch getting list is slow after upgrade to 10.10 (6 posts)

I have staff using Fetch 5.3.1 to connect to our internal FTP server to retrieve data. We have been operating in a production environment on OSX 10.6.8 with no issues. We recently upgraded two machines to OS 10.10 to test the environment. I appreciate any help you can give to reconcile the issue.

To note, I tested Fetch 5.3.1 on my 10.10 laptop clean install and it works without issue.

After upgrade, Fetch behaves very slowly getting the directory list of the users (they have approximately 40 shortcuts to other users). It is taking 10-15 seconds to load the list, and then another few seconds to interact with it. Entering a directory is also slower though there are fewer items on the list. Navigating back to the root directory again takes the 15 or so seconds. This is much slower since upgrade on both machines.

I have exhausted my technical experience where I have deleted the Fetch 5.3.1 app, Fetch cache, Fetch plists, installed Fetch 5.7.5, restarted the machine...all multiple time and it is still performing as I describe. I have since reverted back to 5.3.1 which I have already licensed.

I tried an alternative FTP client and it works flawlessly with no delays. All other functions of the machine appears to be fine.

CPU Type Machine Model Memory Kernel Version System Version Free Disk Space Total Disk Space
    Intel Core i3 iMac 12 GB Darwin 14.5.0 OS X 10.10.5 (14F1021) 431.81 GB 464.96 GB

Below is the log created by 5.7.5. It seems consistent from my review of the logs that there is a 4-6 second delay in the log after the first 14 items are displayed but I have counted and cannot interact or see them until at minimum 15 seconds have passed.

Here is the gap I see in the logs:

Thanks for contacting us about this. I have not seen this issue and don't recall getting other reports of it, but I'd be happy to try to help pin it down.

Am I correct that you see the problem on the two machines upgraded to 10.10, but not on your laptop that has a clean 10.10 install?

    Thanks,

That is correct. 5.3.1 and 5.7.5 both work great on the clean install of 10.10.5. On the two machines that were upgraded to 10.10.5 from 10.6.8 both have issues with Fetch. Both machines took the update well and show no other issues with performance. n install of another FTP client on one of the affected machines has no delay that Fetch is experiencing.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me as I deleted the app, two plists, and the cache and restarted the machines and still had the issue. Unexpected and odd behavior.

By the end of this week, I plan to create a new user and see if Fetch continues to have the issue and will advise here if it improves.

Thanks for that information. You noticed from the timestamps in Fetch.log that the delay happens between two items in the file list that Fetch downloads from the server. Have you noticed if the delay is always at the same place in that list? I'm wondering if Fetch is hitting a "speed bump" when it looks up the icon to display for one of the items in the list. That sort of thing might be different on a clean install than on an upgraded machine.

Trying from a new user account is a great idea as well.

    Thanks,

    Jim,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Busy busy.

I did some testing the issue and have narrowed down the issue we experienced. I mistakenly tested the 10.10 machines with an account did not have many aliases at all (that account had unrestricted access to user accounts and only had one alias). This was a flaw in my testing as the user is only allowed to see certain directories. PureFTPd is the server app and aliases are how it handles access to other directories.

The problem is when there are a large number of aliases in an FTP users directories. It does not matter if the machine was upgraded or a clean install. OSX 10.10 machines, using accounts that had many aliases (44 in the case of the one I tested), show 15-20 seconds of inability to interact with the directory contents while it gives the beach ball. 10.11 has these delays as well but they are half the time. I cannot test 10.9 as we have no machines running that OS. 10.8.5 works as expected, no delay. I have reproduced this on many machines now and am confident the issue is in aliases.

I hope this helps narrow down where the application is having trouble. Thank you for your assistance.

    Regards,
    Rian

    Hi,

I think you're right, that the issue is aliases. I've reproduced the problem myself, and entered it into our bug database as an issue to be fixed. Unfortunately I can't promise when we'll get to it.

    Thanks,
