How to upload Fetch files into desktop app (iWeb) (2 posts)

My computer recently crashed, and all the files I had were deleted: including my iWeb websites I had made. Now, I need to edit one of those websites. I have the information to pull up all the files in Fetch--is there anyway to export these files directly onto my desktop, or better, into iWeb?

    THANK YOU!!

    Hi,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to take the website files from your server and import them back into iWeb.

When you create webiste in iWeb, it stores the website in a special iWeb-only format and file. When you publish the site to a folder, so that you can upload it using Fetch, iWeb exports the files as normal HTML and image files, etc. - but iWeb does not know how to change those published files back into the special iWeb format, so you cannot take those files and edit them in iWeb anymore. You need the original special iWeb format file to continue working on the website in iWeb. If you have a backup of your computer before the crash, it would be best to recover the iWeb files from the backup.

You could use Fetch to download the files from the server to your desktop, and then try to make changes by editing the HTML code directly with a text editor such as TextWrangler, but this can be difficult because the HTML code of iWeb files is not very straightforward.

Sorry not to have a better answer for you - unfortunately this is a limitation of iWeb, not Fetch.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

    Thanks,
