Hi,
After trying to connect with Fetch could you choose Fetch Transcript from the Window menu and post the contents (or submit them at https://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/feedback)? That should provide a clue as to what is going on.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

FYI: Having the same can't-connect with Fetch SFTP problem with WPEngine. Followed WPE's instructions exactly, here:
https://wpengine.com/support/sftp/Works great with FileZilla quick connect via Mac, El Capitan, using WPE's instructions for FileZilla (on the URL above).
It's been kind of a huge struggle for me to get used to WPE's "unique" ways of hosting Wordpress. This is probably one of those quirks.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but there's a support note on WP Engine' site:
"We do not support the SFTP cyphers CBC, RC4, 3DES, MD5, and RIPEMD for security reasons. If your SFTP client uses one of these cyphers, it may not work properly with our platform. We suggest reaching out to your SFTP software maker to get instructions on how to disable these." -

Got it working by following the tips from this link:
<https://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/messageboard/host-key-change>Pertinent info:
+++++
There's been a change to some SFTP servers that keeps Fetch 5.7's automatic detection of host key change errors from working; instead you get that unhelpful 24010 error message. We are working to fix this for a future release.In the meantime, the fix is to edit your ~/.ssh/known_hosts file to remove the line for the server you are trying to connect to.
Another way to open the hidden .ssh folder is to choose "Go to Folder…" from the Go menu in the Finder, and type:
~/.ssh
+++++
Did as instructed above, did a search for "engine" (as in wpengine) and removed just those lines. saved.
works great (for now).
Thank You!

Is there any know issue in connecting to an SFTP on WPengine? I've reset and tried several times, but am getting errors. Support at WPengine says the credentials I'm using are correct, and I tried downloading Filezilla and was able to connect. Just upgraded to the latest version and still no luck. Happening on both a Mac with High Sierra and a Mac with El Capitan.
