The icon used on files you download with Fetch is controlled by the Suffix Mapping list; choose Suffix Mapping... from the Customize menu to change, for example. the .mp3 mapping to use iTunes's creator code rather than QuickTime's.

When I download MP3 files from a FTP server it seems they're stored as movie files (movie icon) on my harddisc. I'am not able to run them in Itunes.
The same mp3 files mailed to me and saved locally are saved as music files (music icon).
I run Macos 9.1
