Hi,
Fetch does not have an option to get confirmation before overwriting (it's something we're hoping to add in a future release). There is an option in the Put dialog to pick a different name for the file if there is a conflict, but unfortunately on some servers this feature creates files with random names.
My recommendation would be to verify that you want to override any conflicts before uploading.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for that update.

Seriously. I've been reading the previous threads on this feature and it's something that is really missing from Fetch, and a lack of a feature that's forcing me to now use different ftp programs. Until this gets added in, I won't be using Fetch in the future.

Thanks for that feedback, Rob. I'd love to hear more about the situations where you'd use such a feature. Would you leave it on all the time, so that you always had to confirm an upload that was going to overwrite an existing file? Or would you just use it some of the time?
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

The option to have it switchable on or off via a preferences panel should be there. By default, this should really be on though! There have been a few instances of junior's using Fetch to upload to a live environment and accidentally dragging and dropping files and then restores having to be initiated!

Hi Jim,
Just wondering - some of the posts on this forum date back to five years ago requesting this feature and it was promised 'soon' back then! Why hasn't it appeared in that time? Thanks!

We are constantly implementing requested features, along with bug fixes and other changes that we have to make to keep Fetch running on new OS X releases. This particular feature requires significant changes to the file transfer engine, and most of the time people want to overwrite all the files on the server (e.g. because they are updating a website). It has therefore been passed over in favor of other features that either were easier to implement, or promised to deliver bigger benefits, or both.
I try to never say that a desired feature will be coming "soon" because development schedules are near-impossible to predict. So I apologize if I mistakenly gave the impression that this feature was coming soon. It remains on our to-do list, but I can't say when it will be released.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Any update on this feature? If I had known this was missing, I wouldn't have purchased Fetch.

Hi Vivian,
No, we do not have anything to report on this feature.
Thanks,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Is there someone I can email regarding a refund on order# ST75813023? I have given Fetch a chance for 2+ months and have realized that I can't work properly without this feature.

Hi Vivian,
I've submitted your refund for processing; you should see a credit on your card in a few days.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Thank you Jim, much appreciated. I'll keep an eye out for this update and switch back to Fetch when it's available.

Another 8 months has pasted since the last posting. I love Fetch but really need this feature. From time to time I will be mirroring my European and my American website - two different hosts. And as it happens some files already exists on the backup server - with 20 gb of data it takes forever to upload the whole site. I need Fetch to let alone files that are of same date and only overwrite older files. What also happens is that the transmission for one reason or another is broken down. And I will have to start over again. All over, if you get my point.

Hi Steen,
If you use the Mirror command Fetch should not upload files that are already up to date on the server. If Fetch is uploading files that have not been changed since the last upload, I would be interested in seeing a transcript (you can submit it at http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/feedback ).
Regarding broken transfers, Fetch 5.6 and later should automatically resume those transfers. That's another thing I'd want to see a transcript for.
Thanks,
Jim Matthews

Hi,
Recent convert to Fetch from one of the other FTP clients and I have a question, I haven't able to figure out how to keep Fetch from automatically overriding an existing file once a file/folder with the same name has been uploaded.
The previous FTP application I used would ask me to "confirm" that I wanted to replace an existing file if I attempted to upload one with the same name.
Thank you for the help.
