It would be helpful to see the contents of the Fetch Transcript window after you encounter this problem. Choose "Fetch Transcript" from the Window menu to reveal the transcript.

Looks like I figured it out. I unchecked a couple of preferences in the misc. section (including the use Type 1 to transfer binary files) and now I can connect and see files and folders.

I am using 4.0 on a G4 mac using OS 9.01. I can connect to my ftp site and see all of the files. However, the folders are showing up as files and I get an error message "the system cannot find the file specified" when I try to open the folder.
